Advice for on-line gamblers? Safeway makes the best shopping carts. Don’t wait until it starts raining to find the best spot underneath the bridge.

Have you seen your 401k lately.

One thing in this life that I truly enjoy is playing Poker.

I have played since I was about 12 years old and it is simply exhilarating to me.

I would not consider ever playing with people that I do not actually know.

That would be stupid.

Thanks to TADSLOS for the heads up.

I apologize to everyone for the lack of pings for a while now. If anyone is interested in taking over the Poker Ping list, please contact me. I am interested in letting this duty go.

I have. I don’t play for big stakes, deposit 50 bucks and play sngs on it until I can afford some more lucrative tourneys, but I have taken a few decent sized prizes down and received my checks in the mail...JFK

Seriously though, I wouldn't recommend jumping in with a large amount of money. Poker Stars (I think) has what are called 'double or nothing' sit and gos. 10 start, and 5 double their money. Someone took bets on whether they could turn 50 bucks into 10k on these games in 20 days, and they did it in 17 (my brother knows all the details, I do not, sorry). Of course this involved playing multiple tables at once.

I would recommend starting considerably lower than 5k and getting the feel of the online game. Play some smaller tourneys (1-50 dollar buy in) and try to have some fun while learning. Also try your hand at some of the satellite tournaments that pay entries into the weekly or monthly big tournaments. The competition is very tough despite the smaller stakes, but the marginal players tend to soften up down the stretch as the stress piles on. Many of the best players take advantage of them to win their way into the bigger tourneys for considerably less money than they would have to pay, and get the added bonus of experience on the way.

However you go, good luck...JFK

I'll give you some advice.

DON'T DO IT!

Online poker can tell you it has the same odds as live poker all it wants to. It doesn't.

I've been playing low stakes ($1 to $5 a tournemnet) on line poker for years. I do it for entertainment, not to try to win money.

If I want to win money I play live.

Some of those tournaments in Reno are kind of soft.

Some of those tournements in Vegas are kind of soft too.

Last time I was there for work I entered a tourney that started at 6:00 PM for $60.
At midnite there were two of us left. First prize was $1,200, second prize was $600.

He had about twice the chips I did.
We made a deal.

Don't play the free games. You will not learn anything from them as the players have no "skin" in the game and they'll play every hand.

If you're in the US you're limited to only a few sites that will accept your deposits. FullTilt is one that I know of because I play there. I don't know any others.

I've been playing for about 4 years on a total of about $300. I just play $1 and $2 SNG tables. I deposit $50 at a time, play for six months or so and finally lose it.

After all this time I know I'd never make it doing this for a living. It's just fun for me.

I like PokerStars the best, as it has by far the most games and tournaments going, and the widest variety of games as well.

But my advice is not to deposit any money at all. Play the freerolls, make a little money, and then slowly work your way up the low-limit cash games and higher buy-in tournaments.

It will be slow going at first, but the practice will definitely pay off, and keep you from moving up too far too fast.

Yes, Poker Stars, and they have a great reputation.

PokerStars or FullTilt.

They’re not the only reputable ones out there, but they’re both huge and are the major sponsors of the World Series Of Poker tournaments.

>>>Before pi&&ing away your money, here are a few recommended books to read:
>>>Super System and Super System II by Doyle Brunson
>>>Hold ‘Em Poker by David Sklansky
>>>Hold ‘Em Poker For Advanced Players by Sklansky & Mason Malmuth

Good point neocon. Do some reading or at least have the “standards” at hand for reference and study. Those three above are definitely in the top ten list. I’m rereading Super System right now.

Also good are “Hold’em Wisdom for all Players” by Daniel Negreanu and “Zen and the Art of Poker” by Larry Phillips.

Try to stick with books by poker players, as opposed to books by poker writers.
