I'm thinking of playing on line poker for money. I've never done so. Can anyone give advice on which venues to use and which ones to avoid? Which ones charge the least overhead? I'm talking abut modest amounts of money--less than $5k. Can anyone give me some advice here?

Find somebody who can verify that they’ve collected on their winnings.

Try some freeroll games first. Try joining roundersraido.com
and get some input from the forums there. I like this site and they have many partnerships with poker rooms. If you cannot win when it is free, why throw your money into the wind. See how good you are before you jump into the quicksand.

I was going to ask the same question but is there a good site where you can play for free then jump to pay mode if you feel lucky?

Take a trip to Vegas and play the tables. At least you’ll get free drinks while you lose your money.

I would never gamble online. Thats crazy. IMO.
Give me 1K and I will play poker online with you for free =o)

I would suggest making sure that your game is in top condition, as the online games are harder than live games. There are several good training web-sites available.
Pokerstars and Full Tilt are two reputable poker rooms.
With a 5k bankroll and limited online experience, you should start in the small stakes games, maybe .50 cent NL, or tournaments with buy-ins $25 or under. Also, sign up through a rakeback affiliate like Raketherake.com so you can get approx 30% of the rake you pay paid back to your account.

PokerStars
Play for free till you’re up to speed - start in micro stakes - pennies, dimes, quarters - move up judiciously
You are nowhere near good enough for the bigger games, or else you wouldn’t be asking this question.

Gambling online against people you do not know and cannot see and have no way to even guess whether or not they are cheating doesn’t seem to be be that prudent.
I would think you’d have a better chance to win if you just flew to Vegas.

Don’t know about that. The reputable sites are rigorous about screening for multi-accounts and people sharing information. I’ve been playing online for years and have never run into any problems. I wouldn’t recommend playing online for a living, but as an entertaining way to make some extra $, its quite fine :)
Anyhow, I don’t want to spam the forum, so PM me if you want any info on how to get rakeback on an account or which training sites are worth the money.

If I was playing poker online against five strangers, I would just assume that the five of them are in a room together sharing screens and conspiring to relieve me of as much money as they could.
There's nothing to prevent that scenario.

I don't know this for a fact but I understand there are ‘bot programs that play in lieu of a real player. The program never makes an “odds” mistake and even can learn opponent's tendencies. You won't know if you are playing a person or a program. Maybe another FReeper has a better insight on the ‘bots. I'd stay away from the higher stakes tables. (actually, I'd stay away from all of the “real money” tables).
