Okay, I figure I would start a little gun thread. Here's the deal you your arsenal consists of the following weapon systems:

Bolt action rifle
Semi-auto rifle
Shotgun
Small calibur rifle
Semi-auto handgun
Revolver handgun

Now choose the weapon for each based on the following criteria; usability, affordability (including ammunition) and practicality

Here I am in the middle of trying to verify the status of everybody on the apod ping list and you have to go and do this. How can I possibly stay away?

Bolt action rifle: Howa 1500, .30-06 cheap, accurate, does everything

Semi-auto rifle: if selected for cost, the SKS wins. If fore reliability, the AK wins. If for versatility, the AR. However, I am not fond of the idea that a rifle should be all things to all people. It then tends to be nothing to anybody. Were it up to me, I would issue the AK-47 as a close support machine gun and the M1A (NOT the M14) as a rifle.

Shotgun: 870 combo

Small calibur rifle: impossible to answer. too many good ones.

Semi-auto handgun: silly question. :)

Revolver handgun: 4” Smith and Wesson 686, the old one with the hard chrome lockwork as opposed to the later revisions with case hardened parts that can rust. If I could own only one firearm, that would be it.

FR gun club ping. BTW, now that I have time and the election is over, I’d like to restart the daily gun club threads. I can do one day, and only one day. If anyone else would like to take a day, please send me a pm.

If I had not sold them all recently, to a person whose name I cannot recall, here's what the list would look like:

Bolt action rifle -- didn't have one; have a .177 pump pellet rifgle in bolt action
Semi-auto rifle -- M1 Carbine & SKS w/ detachable mags
Shotgun -- Winchester 1300
Small calibur rifle -- Ruger 1022 w/scope, green stripled composite stock
Semi-auto handgun -- 1911 .45 w/eight round mags
Revolver handgun -- Several: Rossi .357; RD40 .38 spc snubby; Webley S&W 38; Owlhead S&W 38 5-Shot

I miss them all, especially the Whinchester 1300 assault 12 gage.

How's the Carbon-15 working out for you? I remember those having some problems before Bushmaster bought the design. Does it use a standard AR bolt and carrier?

It seems find to me. Once I get proficient with the 5.56 round I would like to build a lower that can handle a .50 Beowulf, 6.8 SPC, and 5.56 of course. That's on down the road, though.

For me, it all comes down to practicality (nothing else)...and that translates to "ammo", and what's currently and likely to be available for the foreseeable future around these parts. Makes no sense to assemble a "dream quiver" of battle implements if there's no ammo available. Haven't seen any .223 or .308 or .45ACP in months, and 30-30 is rapidly disappearing too.

Bolt action rifle - Anschutz .22 Magnum
Semi-auto rifle - Ruger 10/22 .22 LR
Shotgun - Winchester 1300 Defender 12Ga.
Small caliber rifle - Henry lever action .22 LR
Semi-auto handgun - Glock 19 - 9mm
Revolver handgun - Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum

Bolt action - M1903 A4 with lots of black tip (AP) ammo.
Semi-auto - AR 15 clone.
Shotgun - Benelli M1 (police trade in)
Small calibre rifle - Ruger M77 with Gemtech Supressor.
Semi-auto pistol - Glock G19 with AWC Suppressor and .22 conversion kit.
Revolver - S&W Model 686

Might I add the following?

Lever action rifle (.357 cal)
Sub-Machinegun: Sten gun blank tubes and parts kits (kept separately to prevent constructive possession) Suppressor.
Assault Rifle : DIAS for AR - 15 above with M16 parts kit. (kept separate for construtice possession)
Machinegun: Parts kit with blank side plates for M1919A4 with two tripods and 2 spare parts kits and 10k rounds belted, 100k rounds loose in .308, .30-06, and 8mm.

Add a lathe, mill, drill set, templates, and a generator and crank out your own.....when SHTF.

Okay, I figure I would start a little gun thread. Here's the deal you your arsenal consists of the following weapon systems:

Bolt action rifle: Pre-1964 M70 winchester 308
Semi-auto rifle AR15 5.56mm
Shotgun Benelli M4 (12)
Small caliber rifle Ruger 10/22
Semi-auto handgun H&K P30 9mm
Revolver handgun S&W M460XVR 460 magnum

I put down the Pre-1964 Winchester M70 but the reality is that I do have a Springfield Armory M1A "Supermatch" semi-auto (7.62x51mm) enhanced by ROBAR and I'll probably never own a bolt action again.

Whether 308 (7.62x51mm) or 5.56mm any rifle platform should use NATO standard rounds since that is also what is most often used by our military and most police agencies. Thus supplies will be easier to obtain.

Benelli M4. I'm not a bird hunter and the Benelli I have in mind is strictly a combat or defensive firearm. Can't go wrong in reliability, ruggedness or firepower in an M4 Benelli with collapsible stock.

Ruger 10/22 is just about the best rifle made today for any uses for which anybody might need a 22LR!

H&K P30 9mm I have undying respect for the H&K Brand. The 9mm fits the same NATO standard category and while I might long for the H&K 45 or the new Sig P250 in 45, I'd have to give the nod for stopping power to advanced bullet technology and controlability to the P30 nine. 9mm is going to be more available and less expensive than 45acp in the long run.

S&W 460XVR will drop near any creature on the north American Continent up to an including T-Rex or Sasquatch, if one of either were to be found. It's very flat shooting and can certainly reach out and kill at ranges in excess of 250 meters. In a survival situation, I'm probably not going to take any game (meat) shots in excess of 75 meters, if that. The ammo is incredibly expensive but it has the versatility of using 45 Colt and 454 Casull in the same weapon. So it's like 3 guns in 1. That ranks it above the 38/357 to me.
