Watson calls property tax flap part of a ‘smear campaign’

City councilwoman JoAnn Watson held a press conference Sunday afternoon outside her Tudor-style home to clear the air over news reports of her greatly under-assessed brick house on the city’s west side which city records indicate has not existed for several years.

Watson, an outspoken critic of tax deadbeats and the city’s lack of getting its fair share in outstanding taxes from property owners and businesses, learned last week from newspaper reporters she had been receiving quite a tax break from the city. In 2008, according to city tax records, Watson was assessed only $67.97 in property taxes for her brick home located in the Russell Woods subdivision on the city’s west side. Homeowners owning comparable addresses in the neighborhood pay more than $5,600 a year.

“I’ve been a target of a smear campaign,” Watson told reporters gathered outsider her home on Sturtevant off Dexter Sunday. “... I pay my bills and whatever I was billed, I paid.”

Pressure mounting to curb Detroit Council’s $6.2M budget

Councilwoman JoAnn Watson was the biggest spender from May to December with $337,347, in large part because she hired 13 additional employees — none who earned more than $23 an hour.

You have got to be kidding me! This person, a member of the entitlement class, had her house hit by a tornado in perhaps 2003 or 1993 and she did not file an insurance claim? Wonder if any neighbors remember that tornado?

From the photo posted in the link, that home would be worth ALOT more than $40,000 to $60,000 where I come from. I would think even for west side Detroit it would be worth more, but a building is only really worth what someone will pay for it.

“...city records have classified the parcel as an empty lot for the past decade....”

So, is she going to be billed for the under-appraisal for the last Decade? Or, is that going to be written off?

Sorry to hear the poor lady got hit by a tornado. I know what that is like. Took me a couple months to get my house fixed back up, but I don’t remember getting a break on my taxes. Those Michigan tax collectors must be really nice guys. Maybe I should move there (NOT).

$68 in taxes per year.

And she didn't realize that there was a discrepancy.
