(WPIX) - Surrounded by water Montauk comes to life in the summer. The quaint village hasn't changed much over the years, but there is something different in the air.
Montauk is back on the radar of conspiracy theorists, ever since something strange washed up on the shore last summer, dubbed the " Montauk Monster." Many people believe it was just a hoax made of plaster or a dead animal.
"I heard it's just some kind of raccoon or something," said Montauk resident Bill Bock.
There are those who believe the "Montauk Monster" was a mutated animal that escaped from 'The Federal Animal Disease Research' facility on nearby Plum Island. Then, there are those who believe the "Montauk Monster" was left over from secret experiments at nearby 'Camp Hero.'
The World War II military base was shut down in 1947, but many believed years later secret experiments were conducted in the now abandoned buildings. There were even books written about it, including "The Montauk Project."
Officials at Plum Island told PIX News no mutant animals are escaping into the sea and the US Army denies any secret experiments ever took place at 'Camp Hero.'
From the photos, the Town of East Hampton natural resources director deemed the "Montauk Monster" nothing more than a large raccoon that was skinned. There are varying accounts as to what happened to it, after Peter Hewitt's daughter snapped one of the now infamous photos.
"One of those wise guy kids took it," said Hewitt. "It's up behind someone's house there in the woods."
Earlier this month something else washed up on shore, but this time on the North Fork.
"It looks like nothing I have ever seen before," said Nicky Papers who shot video of the gruesome discovery. "Either this animal had been very sick....operated on...or it's the result of an experiment."
Papers told PIX News the couple who found this monster wrapped it up in garbage bags and left with it never to be seen, or heard from again. While most locals are skeptical, there is a sense of mystery.

A quadruped w/ a beak? Weird.
This stuff is great fun.
Ok people...enough is enough!! Have you no decency? Can Helen Thomas sun bath without photos being plastered on the internet??!! Leave the poor woman alone.
This monkey with toenails proves evolution and there’s no God!
Just looking at that picture I can smell it.....yuck

It’s just purely coincidence that this animal has only been seen twice and both times were near this Animal Research Facility and nowhere else on earth.
Yeah, just a coincidence. Nothing to see here. move along!
I think it’s a dead dog with a partially debrided skull. Dogs have more varied morphology in their skulls than almost any other species due to the misguided breeding programs to produce differing breeds.
