A bumper sticker: Kick The Unconscious

If the cameras weren’t rolling they would have got away with it. Good or bad, who knows. The idiot endangered every person in every car he passed on the chase, so a good kick to the head might put some sense into him, or the next guy that thinks about running.

UPDATE: "Five Birmingham police officers have been fired for a January 2008 beating of an already-unconscious suspect with fists, feet and a billy club, a battering caught on videotape until a police officer turned off the patrol car camera, city and police officials said today. Authorities believe the video,

[see the full 20-minute chase here] taken after a high-speed chase by several area law enforcement agencies ended when the fleeing suspect's van flipped, has been seen by numerous Birmingham officers and up to a half dozen supervisors over the past year. But top city and police officials weren't made aware of the taped beating until they were contacted by the district attorney's office two months ago."

The only objection I have being-he could not feel the proper thumping the cops were giving him!

Simple rule to remember:

If the cops have to chase you, they’ll be bringing an ass-kicking with them.

that was not a billy club. i know it’s a small point but it’s on par to when the media says ‘assualt rifle’ and it is nothing close.

As the camera was turned OFF, there was a coverup to the actions.

The question remains, who else knew and what did they do about it?

Simple rule to remember:

If the cops think they can get away with it, they may be bringing an ass-kicking with them.

Put cameras in the jails and see them scale back on the illegal beatings they engage in there as well.

Instead we get red light cameras.

NEVER EVER make a cop run after you.

It will not end well...

I love to see the guys with their pants half way down their a*s run away frmo the cops. One hand is for the pants, the other is for running. Makes me smile when they get tackled two seconds into the chase.

Takes a real ‘tough guy’ to beat an unconscious man. Typical.

Seems to me the guy was fleeing for good reason.

‘Protect & serve’ my ass.

I live about fifty miles from Bham, and as you can imagine, this is a hot topic in the media. As much as I am sympathetic to the officers involved, they violated their oaths and the laws of the State of Alabama. Police officers are not ABOVE the law. Because law enforcement officers are given much power, they have to use it with restraint. I do not feel any sympathy for the hoodlum, and he is now serving twenty years in prison. The officers deserved to be fired. They knew what they did was wrong. I do agree with the previous posters, if you run from the cops, get ready for an ass-beating.

From the video the “Van Guy” was a menace to anyone near him and his 3,000 pound “Human Mallet”. In fact, he sideswipes 2 vehicles and if not for the quick response of the officer laying down spike strips, he would have killed the officer.

We don't see video that precedes this but if the cops start dragging out spike strips, you have been driving in a manner that will lead someone or many people deaths.

Adrenaline does a lot to you on these chases. Been on a few as a ride along and you get amped up. The first officer strikes “Van Guy” with a flashlight and falling backwards the rest of the cops join in a 10 second melee.
They may have thought the other cop was pushed back.

If the guy was unconscious he probably did not incur any serious injury as a result. In fact, I will bet most serious injuries occurred when he was ejected from the Van.

I hope he is cited for not wearing a seatbelt. If the vehicle you are driving flips over, wearing a seatbelt could save your life or mitigate aggravated assault by cops.

For my money, turning off the camera was a worse crime than the beating that I saw. OTOH, no one knows about the beating that went on after the camera was turned off.

For the one who turned off the camera: firing, a liberal dose of jail time, and enough damages paid to the victim to cause personal bankruptcy.

For the ones who participated in the beating, firing, a small amount of jail time, and pay enough damages to cause bankruptcy.

For the "higher-ups" who saw the tape and ignored it, same as the guy who turned the camera off.

I am not an always a defender of cops caught on camera. But my first thought after seeing this was that the driver should face attempted murder charges for almost hitting the spike-strip officer. My second thought was, after pursuing someone at high speeds, watching him almost take out other motorists and a fellow officer, the adrenalin has to be so freakin’ high that it’s a wonder they stopped when they did. Never been in that situation obviously, but I would think that you almost would not even be aware of what you were doing in those first few seconds after the stop.

The dirtbag risked the lives of many innocent people. If he had killed your spouse, children or parents, you might see it differently.

The dirtbag obviously had no regard for others, he needs to be removed from society.

You have no idea the amount of energy it requires to focus so you are control and respond as a professional. The cops “reacted” in this instance. After a 20 minute chase and seeing a brother officer nearly flattened, not to mention any number of ridiculous actions this moron took.

I don’t blame the cops and they should put an asterisk next to this guys booking report to identify him as one who is dumber than a box of rocks.
