They were once a symbol of success and a love of music.
Giovanni Lovatelli and his family lucked into a long-term loan of a 1948 baby grand piano when a friend moved to New York years ago. Five-year-old Giacomo began taking lessons, practicing diligently for a year or so.
"We had to keep pushing a little bit," Lovatelli said, adding that he promised a basketball hoop if his son persevered through his teacher's recital.

Hot Buy Suzuki GP-7 BL 4'1" Baby Grand Digital Piano Black $2,499.99
When I was 17 my mom and dad sold the family piano so I could go on a Senior trip to Hawaii!
With the way people move from place to place today, having a quarter ton object which cannot fit easily through doors is not as desirable.
My wife and I just bought a Clavinova and I am taking lessons. Very relaxing and a break from politics and TV.
The digital pianos can be switched to sound like any kind of piano, and many other instruments, and sound amazing, and weigh 20 lbs.
Unless it is a really good piano in good shape, it’s just not worth the hassle.
Is that just a digital keyboard with a baby grand looking cabinet built around it?
Keyboards are far better than they used to be, but can they duplicate a grand piano’s action?
The first time I was allowed to practice on a true 9’ 8” concert grand, I was (for lack of a better word) completely hooked by that robust action that took real effort to play and at the same time prevented most stumbling. Trying to go back to the family Acrosonic was like falling down stairs.
I don’t have a piano in the house. But my parents still have two of them in their house.
“We didn’t have an organ so my wife put a galosh on the piano.”
Badaboom.
Boy, the way Glenn Miller played
songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us we had it made.
Those were the days.
Didn't need no welfare state.
Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great
those were the days.
And you knew who you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men.
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content.
Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent.
Those were the days.
Take a little Sunday spin.
Go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day
that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long.
Kate Smith really sold a song.
I just don't know what went wrong.
Those were the days.
That is absolutely amazing!
Reminds me of Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” program on NPR.
You’ve convinced me, that digital piano sounds great!
Playing the piano is directly linked to literacy, math skills and reasoning ability.
All of which are of no use (indeed hinder) the Obamanation of America.
He refinished the piano himself in the black lacquer finish....he then hire a professional to take care of the guts.....It really is a magnificent piece...
My son plays. And plays well. A tradition continues. (Well, a tradition is born, really.)
I have my Mom’s piano. She needed more room, I gladly took the piano. It’s beautiful even when not being played. Memories of when I took lessons are nice too.
Very true. However, I've moved my grand piano 5 times in the past 10 years due to my husband's job. It's been a hassle...but I love it.
One of the best things I've ever done. He's ready to take over for "the Killer" when Jerry Lee plays his last note, (which is hopefully many, many years from now).
We have My Wifes upright Piano that was her Great Grandmothers. It came into Central Kansas on a wagon and we carried it to Texas on a trailer. it sits in the Front Grand hall of our old Craftsman home, looks quite nice there too.
I love to hear her play and she is teaching my daughters the art.
My Wife plays for our Church as well her Talent is truly a blessing.
That’s great! Do you mind me asking?... How did you motivate your kids to take it up and stick with it? Or were they self-motivated? I’m guessing it helps a lot if there are other musicians in the family.
