Neil Strauss hardly seems like a guy who'd kill a goat and gut it with his own hands. A slim intellectual in silver jewelry and designer jeans, he doesn't appear to be the kind of person who would stash food in a forest or plot an escape from his Los Angeles-area home using fire trails and a motorcycle he barely knows how to ride.
Yet that's precisely what Strauss has learned to do in the past three years in an effort to prepare himself should society collapse. It's a journey he not only chronicles in his new book, "Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life," but continues to pursue.
Strauss is a guy whose BlackBerry is constantly brimming with projects. (Get motorcycle license. Take pain-resistance training. Grind grain.) He's looking to strike a few items off his list.
"I'm here to pick up a shotgun," he says, stepping up to the counter at Gun World, a Burbank shop whose anteroom is loaded with ammo and shell cases. The shotgun is a Remington 870 Wingmaster — the third part of an unholy trinity that also includes a 9-millimeter pistol and a rifle, all of which he keeps in a hidden safe at his house.
"Three years ago, I never would have been in a gun store," says Strauss...

"We were born with a silver spoon in our mouths. Bad things happened to previous generations," says Strauss, explaining the original, third-person premise for "Emergency," which evolved into a first-person survivalist how-to.
"We had it all," continues Strauss, who is in his late 30s. "The Cold War was over. The Internet was bringing everybody together. Wars were a thing of the past. Then all the things that happened from 2001 to today, it was like dominoes falling over.

I find this interesting. The folks who live in the red counties of Ca and in the red states of this nation don’t want people like him around when times are tough. We stay prepared all the time and are not interested in the city people running our way when their way of life fails.
Stay in the city and take your chances. You made that bed and it is yours forever.
It is total arrogance to believe that three firearms and a motorcycle constitute the ability to live and sustain oneself. Where do I start when replying to such ignorance? Anyone who has lived off the land knows that it takes all year to reap a good harvest. That bounty will not be shared with someone who just shows up on a low mileage motorcycle with a gun in their hands. Money will be useless at that point in time.
These folks better start storing food and water and make their stand right where they are. They won’t be able to move that much food and water out of the cities and they dam well aren’t welcome around here without it.
Tough spot they are going to be in.
I view the socialist entitlement attitude of the beehive city mentality as being the direct cause of the downfall of our nation. I think most of the “red” areas of our nation agree with that assessment. It is very much an “us versus them” mentality. In the end we will have the food, water, and energy sources. Why should we share what we need to survive with those who caused all the problems?
I would not be so quick to mock actors with demonstrated intelligence, flexible ethics, and a bone-deep commitment to getting their own way.

okay I guess I can see the sarc on the last two...but ‘demonstrated intelligence’ from a guy that just got hosed on an 870 wingmaster, and prolly on the street bike that he plans to take into ‘the countryside’ ???
People like Strauss are welcome, IMO, as long as they’re humble enough and willing to learn more about conservative living. As for their doomsday fears, a few years in a rural or frontier area tends to calm them down.
I look at it like this.. the more guys like him out there.. the better for those of us who are into prepping hardcore. At least I know this guy wont be at my door a week after an event asking for food.. lol
At least he is doing something. I find that the very few friends who know about me, are starting to ask lots and lots of questions of me these days.

I bet it's a real hoot to be a dinner guest at this guys house.
You know...reading this article, from a guy like that, who probably spent most of his semi-adult life (he IS a Lib, after all - eternal narcississtic children with on-demand temper tantrums) sneering at people of our mindset and trying hard to legislate and agitate against what WE hold dear, etc...well, I just have to smile to myself and try very hard to remove the Un-Christian things that come to my mind.
Suffice to say, my order of priority is this: My family’s survival comes first.
People like this liberal ass-clown author, late to the “party” with his “Uh-Oh Moment” and his three firearms, can rot for all I care. I do not welcome him as an ally, I do not require his company, nor his arms, nor his counsel. He is NOT my countryman. HE is part of the reason my country is in the mess we now find ourselves in.
Him and others like him will more likely find themselves received like those in James Wesley-Rawles’ book “Patriots - Surviving the Coming Collapse” by people of our mindset.
When it comes to my family and my Country “This, We’ll Defend”...
