Looks like he grabbed the kids “hoodie” and pulled it over his face while he grabbed the gun.

Poor kid, he was taught all his life that physical violence against him by anyone in authority (parents, police, adults in general) was illegal. He thought he had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted with no consequences.
