I’m a true Sportster aficionado. I’m on my 3rd Sporty, and having owned 2 big twins, I’ll never own anything but a Sportster.

That said, it’s not a good choice for a beginner. I really like to see beginners on small 250cc-450cc bikes for a at least a year. Earn your stripes then move up to a full-sized bike.

Melas knows his Sporties.

HD isn’t going anyplace, they will be there when you get some experience. Get a used, cheap bike you won’t be afraid to drop at a stoplight. Ride the snot out of it, sell it for about what you paid for it, and then get your Sporty or whatever other Harley you want.

you're actually suggesting someone NOT get a harley? i'm shocked!

whatchu think? maybe a used vulcan 500 would probably be a good suggestion. similar riding position, much lower price, less weight, and a lot less power.

Agree...
a 250-450 range bike gives the most “forgiving” ride
and is a great way to build up the “muscle memory”
to be able to control the bigger bikes.

They are generally, however, insufficient
to handle expressway driving.

If you have never driven a motorcycle,
some might even consider a 250-500cc range scooter
so you do not have to simulataneously learn
transmission/clutch skills
