Two Hollywood stars are stepping up to help an elderly woman in need. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have pledged to help Millvina Dean. She is the last survivor of the Titanic.
Millvina was sent to a nursing home in the English city of Southampton after breaking her hip three years ago. Since then she has struggled to pay the fees.
She has already sold several Titanic mementoes to raise cash, but is still short. There are reports that the Hollywood stars pledged "considerable donations" towards the $30,000 fund to help keep Millvina in her nursing home.
Kate and Leo said in a statement that they hoped Millvina could rest easier knowing that her future was secure. The Millvina Fund was launched Monday in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
A Whopping $30K! Hey Leo, can you spare it? She is (*, it probably won’t cost that much to keep her up. Cheapskate
Only good thing Leo has done. He is a horrid actor.
They’re just trying to get the Heart of The Ocean from her. Where did you hide it, tell me before Leo smothers you honey!
You mean that nursing home care is not covered by the UK system of universal health care?
Milvina is adorable!
He was great in The Aviator and a raft of other films.
What fees? I thought England had free health care?
They have to cut corners. The very old and very young need to go...

Reads like the total fund is 30K, and they just put up a 'considerable donation' towards it.
What's 'considerable'? 15K? 20K?
How much did you give her?
I am so happy that they are doing this. They know they made a name for themselves due to Titanic and they are remembering it.
And what are you sending her????? Sheesh they are doing a nice thing and you bash. What a jerk.
I think of him like Tom Hanks. He used to be very good when not so famous, but he’s a little lazy now. He was great in Gilbert Grape and Basketball Diaries, and IMHO actually pulled off Shakespeare in Romeo+Juliet (although the film would have collapsed without the support of Pete Postlethwaite’s acting).
He’s much more talented than Hanks. He’s been good very recently in The Aviator and other things.
The movie made $600,779,824.
This is like when the people who made hundreds of millions on Slumdog millionaire gave something like $10,000 to the community, while the girl still lives in a home flooded with sewage.
And I echo the sentiments about England’s socialized medicine failing this woman.
Yeah and that entire amount was divided up amongst the two of them. /sarc
Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t hurting financially. At the time of the film, director James Cameron brought painter Robert Williams to the set and introduced him to DiCaprio who has since bought a number of his paintings (probably on the secondary market, as new works were bought/spoken for years before they’d even been painted).
$30,000 would be cheap for one of his paintings “new”.
If he wasn’t advocating that I do more “for the environment”, maybe I wouldn’t be so critical of what he does with his money. But if an elderly woman can’t make up the difference, it doesn’t really matter if it was $10,000 or $30,000 she’d still short.
Perhaps he can force her to auction off a few more of her Titanic trinkets and pick them up for a song.
