Why some single women just need to shut up
www.cnn.com ^ | 4/28/09 | Wendy Atterberry

In a recent column on the Huffington Post, "Why I'm Single," writer Lea Lane lists all the reasons that she's still single. Why? So she can send the URL to all the nosy, possibly well-meaning busy-bodies who keep asking her why she isn't in a relationship.

Lane presents a persuasive case; it almost made me wish for the days I, too, had the whole bed to myself. She's one of what I'll call the "Happies," women who are perfectly content with their single status.

They don't want for a companion; they love their solitude and have enough friends, hobbies, and passions to keep themselves busy.

Although, most Happies, like Lane, are "open to options, and do understand the beauty and wonder -- and blessing -- of a good relationship," they neither actively seek one nor passively hope and pray one comes their way. The Happies say they don't need a relationship to be content, and, by God, they mean it.

On the other side of the single lady spectrum, you've got the "Crappies." They're the single ladies with really crappy attitudes. Take, for example, Jezebel's Megan Carpentier, who responded to Lane's column with a list of her own, a list that not only doesn't make me a little nostalgic for my single days, it makes me sort of, well, sad -- for her.

I'm sad for the Crappies, because, as much as they say

Omaha beach had about 10% casualties. American marriage has about 50%. Let that sink in a second.

50% of all marriages end in divorce, but that's not such a bad thing since the other 50% end in death.

There is no reason not to help her out where and when I can. I suppose I could take the "macho" approach....but, I know she appreciates the help. I guess that is why she never gives me a hard tome when I want to go out with a few of the guys for a beer on a Saturday night. You reap what you sow.

You are a smart man!

First: lunch, then take it from there.

First, coffee, then take it from there.

Easier to walk away from a cup of coffee, rather than spend a miserable time through a whole meal.

#10 is probably the reason I’m still single...

Personally, I don’t mind it too much as I’m still a bit young to get married. If a good guy (who’s single, see above about parking spaces) comes along at the right time for both of us, then I won’t be single. Until then, I’ll enjoy things like putting Batman sheets on my bed, or not caring if you can barely see the floor in my room under all the laundry cause nobody else is going in there, or playing video games/watching sci-fi with my single friends on weekend nights instead of worrying about going on a date...

Same reason I still am but I don’t do the Batman sheets or have my stuff strewn around ... I’m messy but not so much ...

American women can be trained! (Im probably going to get bashed a bit for that but oh well!) Thanks to my hubby I now drive a truck, go hunting and fishing, drink beer, and listen to country music. I buy shoes that are comfortable, and purses that are sturdy. I want not for friendship - he provides all of that I could want. (I tried having women friends but got really sick of being a shoulder and an audience to their husband-bashing.) He is very proud of the work he has done on me.

Of course all the good men/women are taken. Why? Because they’re GOOD!

They won’t be very happy when they are all alone on their deathbed, and wonder why there’s nobody there.

Since most women outlive men, that's a poor reason to get married - planning for a one-time event. And what if you die suddenly in an accident? What a waste of being married!

Well, BruceysMom, you sound like a gem to me.
We are the same age. I’m 50 years old.
I often tell anyone who will listen to me, that I would rather have one 50 year old, than two 25 year olds.
And, most of them think I’m joking.
By the way, my best (girl) friend is approaching 60.
(Don’t tell her I told you.)
She would rather hang out with the boys, rather than some of the superficial, gossipy women around here.
Take care. We know who we are.

You gave me a good chuckle when you said you got tired of being a shoulder, and sounding board.
My best (girl) friend says exactly the same thing to me.
She knows that when one of her friends call her, out of the blue, that she will get a ear-full of complaints.
That’s why she would rather hang out with me, and our other male friends.

I love hanging out with the guys! They are welcome at my house any time, and they know it.

My BIGGEST regret after leaving the USMC, is that I did not move to Chile, Argentina or Uruguay.

Spent some time in Venezuela and Brazil, where there are loads of unattached women.

No one likes to be alone night after night, why kid yourself.

Speak for yourself. Was married for 16 years (I'm a male) and now divorced and single for 15 and love it. Have had too many girlfriends to count since divorcing, and I like that they go home at some point. My experience is that with a relationship my workload goes up and the reward doesn't match the effort. Sometimes I just don't want to work that hard as I am so busy with other things and friends so I don't even date. And like it or not no matter what anyone says we all die alone. The lady who cuts my hair asked me once why I don't stay in a steady relationship or get married again to which I replied: "if I find someone who is more of an asset than a liability maybe I would" and she said that is something I should not expect to find. I said "well then there ya go!" Why would anyone strap themselves to a liability on purpose??

They are rare...but i have know a couple of people that are contented being single...they are in their early 60’s....although i admit that they are quite asexual.

Wow...I have just the opposite experience. I know far more single happy people than happy married people.

Three of my acquainces (All three small business owners) went to China and have taken Chinese women as wives. They say they'll never have another thing to do with an American woman

That's fine as long as you move to China. Bring a foreign woman to the US and it won't be long before she becomes culturalized and just like any other American woman....

The superficiality of most of the women my age is off-putting, to say the least. My best (girl) friend, however, can tune up a 1970 Ford Maverick, including gapping the plugs and points, and putting new plug wires on it. Also, she is one of the most elegant dancers you would ever see in your life. They are out there. But, they are an endangered species.

Totally agree with you there. That's why I keep one eye out for the Sarah Palin type....now that's a woman!!
