Is globalism and "free trade" what's destroying the GOP? (America-first vanity)
Posted on 05/09/2009 12:47:21 PM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network
Yesterday I happened upon a post by a fellow FReeper. In retrospect, I am sorry for responding rudely to their post - and I hope they happen upon this apology.
The post was presenting their heartfelt opinion that American industry and our system itself must be allowed to come apart so that something better can replace it.
It was a Rand-ian position. The system is becoming oppressive, therefore we must weaken it.

One thing is certain: all it would take is me to ask where you were born, and that would ensure that no one will ever find out. I wasn't aware that homepage flags were supposed to be birthplace flags.
Or we're you just being a blatant hypocrite?

Mojave could've easily said that he didn't know the answer to Toddsterpatriot's question and that would've been the end. ToddP: "What is your position on average tariffs when Reagan entered office and when he left office? After 2 terms, were they higher or lower?"
Mojave: "I don't know what the figures were for 1988."
What isn't clear about that?

Like Democrats, Socialists, protectionists . . . . Buzzzzz - wrong.
I don't buy into the Free Trade - labor arbitrage, as I know it's a loser for this nation.
Notice who controls the WH and the legislature?
Take every dollar the Zero and his Clown Posse wastes and add it to the cost of crap we import; don't look like a bargain now does it?

Why would you ask someone else what you are arguing?
Are we supposed to be mindreaders?
Why not just state what you think?

I have argued that Reagan was a free-trader up and down this thread. I never disputed that Reagan placed tariffs on motorcycles, or quotas on autos. Yet the latter proves Reagan was a protectionist, but I can't even get anyone to acknowledge the trade agreement with Canada, the trade negotiations with Mexico . . . and don't get me started on the Uruguay Round and the WTO. No one has the balls to discuss them. This is about the most clear you have been in any post I've seen. But it seems quite conflicting.
From what you posted here, can I conclude that you believe one can be a free-trader and protectionist at the same time?
Where do the "hypocrite" and "destructionist" labels come in?

Yep... isn’t that something? They must have one heck of a large funeral planned for someone.
To: calcowgirl
"Hypocrite" comes from the flamewar that we're having (not you and I, specifically, just on the thread), and "Protectionism is destructionism" is a direct quote, in Reagan's own words. It's why Mojave wants to pretend it doesn't exist.

You've correctly identified a conflict, but not its source: in a nutshell, the source is Mojave's attempt at sophistry. Reagan can be called a protectionist because he raised tariffs on products from Japan, but Reagan cannot (according to Mojave) be called a free-trader because he lowered tariffs on products from Canada. There's your conflict . . . .
To: 1rudeboy
Let's leave mojave out of it.
In your opinion, can one be a free-trader and protectionist at the same time?

Of course. The world is not as simple as Mojave expects you to believe. (No, I won’t leave him “out” of it). My comment is directed at both of. It’s more efficient.

I think something really big could potentially come from the union money going to the ACORN false headquarters.

Read my #630—it accurately describes the game you’re playing.

If we had a GOP senate and congress to do an honest to God investigation, I would agree with you. If we had an honest media I would agree with you. Short of the NY Post, Washington Times and Wall Street Journal and Fox News we have no one what will pay any attention to this — sort of reminds me of William Jeffereson and his $100K in the freezer; when our own Speaker of the House, Hastert, tried to sweep it under the carpet we were in deep trouble and it’s only gotten progressively worse since then.
To: 1rudeboy
[Where Ronald Reagan saw trade regulations, restrictions or tariffs that didn't serve the best interests of the American people, he would work to remove or amend them. Where Reagan saw that regulations, restrictions or tariffs that served our national interests, he would retain or create them.]
The world is not as simple as Mojave expects you to believe.
Backwards. You're the one into simplistic labels and anti-Reagan smears.

But you can't help yourself.

Do you agree with other contentions on this thread, that if one believes there might be exceptions to a free trade philosophy, where tariffs/duties/fees (or whatever you want to call them) are appropriate, they are for "managed trade" and expressly not a "free-trader"?
