Yesterday I happened upon a post by a fellow FReeper. In retrospect, I am sorry for responding rudely to their post - and I hope they happen upon this apology.
The post was presenting their heartfelt opinion that American industry and our system itself must be allowed to come apart so that something better can replace it.
It was a Rand-ian position. The system is becoming oppressive, therefore we must weaken it.
It certainly does. If one percent of imported products have a tariff of one hundred percent, then the average across all imported products is one percent. One is less than one hundred. Go find your calculator.

Protectionists aren't fascinating at all, they're simply hypocrites. Tomorrow they'll be arguing that we cannot compete with Mexican labor because of Mexico's lax environmental laws.
I know someone here on FR was making that argument to me just last week.
Ah, but there is free U.S. military technology for China. As long as you don't consider the "campaign contributions" to Clinton and Al (Iced Tea) Gore.
Why don't you revise and extend your remark to make sense, first?
Start with #408.
And you claimed that Ronald Reagan was a "protectionist."
What level of tariffs would have prevented China from stealing sensitive technology in exchange for campaign contributions? Pick your metric: all imports, or all imports subject to tariff. LOL
Granted all this "free trade" stuff started under Bush 41 -- no conservative IMHO -- but it went on steroids under Clinton. Ross Perot was right and voters back then knew he was right... I'm not certain 20 years later we have an educated enough electorate to figure anything out for themselves.
Now you are reminding me of my comment #45 on this thread? lolwut?
Read the thread, and weep.
Free traders Bill Clinton and Al Gore took the bribes.
Your claim that Ronald Reagan was a "protectionist" came in post #408, as I recall. I realize what a chore it must be for you to remember all of your smears and misrepresentations of Ronald Reagan.
Oh they'll fuss and feud about my comments, but did we help Germany in the years leading up to WW2?
Hell yes, Ford Werks (old man Ford's German division) increased plants all over Germany. Opel (GM's European divison) built more tanks than kraut owned companies.
Donald Douglas and Hamilton Standard/ all the industrialists/ supplied Japan with licensed copies of their latest designs of their aviation products.
(Good money in War ;^)
Yep. Bill and algore made sure that the NAFTA agreement started under Bush 41 was the "greenest trade agreement ever written..."
I’m a lot less concerned about the industrial unions than I am the service workers unions, govt employees unions and teachers union.
The industrial workers aren’t as wildly liberal as some would like to believe. I was never liberal when I was a union member and it looked to me like my coworkers really reflected the general population ideologically.
The service workers, govt employees, and teacher’s unions are the ideologues and they seem very much involved with groups like ACORN and they’re far more powerfull than all the industrial unions put together.
Check out their homepage flags.
What average tariffs number?
No one has posted any numbers.
Did you watch Glenn Beck this afternoon? Now we have full circle ACORN, SEIU, GE, Obama.....
