Is globalism and "free trade" what's destroying the GOP? (America-first vanity)

Posted on 05/09/2009 12:47:21 PM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network

Yesterday I happened upon a post by a fellow FReeper. In retrospect, I am sorry for responding rudely to their post - and I hope they happen upon this apology.

The post was presenting their heartfelt opinion that American industry and our system itself must be allowed to come apart so that something better can replace it.

It was a Rand-ian position. The system is becoming oppressive, therefore we must weaken it.

The RINOs lie about Reagan every chance they get.

No, borrow and spend killed the GOP. Globalism and outsourcing killed the economy.

...essentially stunting free trade and ....

You are kidding us of course.

And the gov't forced AIG and others to get into the derivatives market?

No, what happened is everyone got greedy, instead of building better mousetraps so to speak - everyone said screw it, let's go to offshore production. We got away with it for a while, thanks to a national VISA card and HELOC's and a bogus real estate market - much of which the .gov is responsible for. But now the bill has come due.

So add in the cost of Zero's spending to the cost of all the imported goods. Don't look like we got a bargain does it?

The terms outsourcing is being replaced with “global sourcing.” Kind of like how algore and his followers like to use “Climate Change” as an alternative to the phrase “Global Warming.”

Now that we have a lefty in the White House and more running Congress, they'll blame everyone but themselves.

The simple fact is: they fell for the oldest con in the world - "something for nothing".

Good observation. They always use euphemisms to soften the blow. And often, they are successful.

Obama even wants to renegotiate NAFTA to add more environmental requirements. Apparently the prior negotiations by algore and Bill Clinton that made NAFTA the “greenest trade agreement ever written” aren’t enough for the supporters of a New World Order.

Uh huh... sure. And billions for road/highway expansion and maintenance for all those trucks tearing up the roads, going from port to freight forwarding facilities, are all covered by your fees, right? Sorry — the math doesn’t work, despite the graft.

“Free Trade Agreements” are not about free trade. It’s more like a massive affirmative action program run by more government bureaucrats to demand that businesses have “equal opportunity” in foreign markets, with the government acting as their marketing department and taxpayers serving as their insurance company. I wonder how businesses ever survived without government sponsored “trade missions” /s. Even Milton Friedman called NAFTA “managed trade.”

Right you are. ‘Free’ trade is government to government agreements negotiated by lobbyists that our Reps couldn’t even see until they were done deals.

On the question - Is globalism and “free trade” what’s destroying the GOP?

A. You betcha.
Real trade is you buy from us and we buy from you. “Free trade” is we send you American jobs, factories and dollars for cheap expendables. The sucking sound of the ‘Free’ trade winds lost the Reagan Democrats, the GOP margin of victory.

I’m glad this thread happened when it did. We are about to release five volumes of Reagan’s diaries. We can only hope that the Big Government “conservatives” on this thread read just one.

Reagan's Fault™.

Apart from the joke, I'm wondering if you even consider the validity of impugning a previous Administration for the actions of a later Administration. Is that your thing? That you can "reach back" and impugn someone simply because of a subsequent event?

What level of tariffs do you propose in order to keep those infernal trucks from tearing up our roads?

Reagan's Fault™.

Obama's intention to use the NAFTA agreement to create more international environmental restrictions, just like algore and Bill Clinton before him, is Reagan's fault?

Your lies about Ronald Reagan keep growing larger and more bizarre with every post.

And don't forget, in the case of NAFTA, also saddling America with the “greenest trade agreement ever written.”

Tariff, tax, fee, ... whatever you want to call it.

I would propose that it be set at whatever the amount is to reflect the *true* cost of the import.

I don’t think those imports should be subsidized.

All the RINOs have to do is keep insisting that the 2,000 pages of NAFTA regulations and restrictions are "free trade." Problem solved.
