Usually to break a hold. Either because your hands are busy immobilizing his, or he has your hands immobilized. Its a great way to break a hold. The front of the cranium is very strong, drive it into your opponents nose and he will let go, step back and give you a chance to reposition.

Also if you break a person's nose their eyes teer up and swell shut. Escaping from, or beating up depending on your intentions, a blind opponent is a lot easier than one who can see you.

I agree with what #29 said, a hard big bone like the forehead going up against a smaller bone like a nose or cheekbone is like a full-size pickup colliding with a Prius. The pickup will fare much better every time.

No, punching someone in the face can really, really hurt. It' easy to break your fingers -- that's why boxers wear gloves.

Second, it's much less expected, and much faster than a punch, thus much harder to defend against. You can really rock someone's world with a solid headbutt to the nose.
