The sign on the door says Beware of Dog, but family and friends say two pit bulls accused of attacking a mail carrier are friendly.
According to a police report, two pit bulls attacked Troy Wood, a Frankfort mail carrier, at 104 Spring St. on April 1. Wood told police he hurt his arm when he fell to the ground, and the dogs did not bite him.
Wood did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday, but postmaster Don Hopper said the dogs bit Wood on the leg and chest.
Kimberly Rose, the dogs owner, along with friends and neighbors, said Friday that the dogs are not vicious. She introduced a reporter to her two pit bulls, Tank and Mia.
Pit bulls have a bad reputation because of the people that raise them and teach them to fight, she said.
Tank is 4 and has white fur.
Mia is 2 and has reddish-brown fur with a white muzzle.
She also has two older dogs, Jezzable, a 6-year-old pit bull, and Sugar Cookie, a 9-year-old golden retriever. She kept the dogs inside because she said they are old and sometimes get upset.
Family friend Chris Pauley said Tank and Mia are well-trained and know several tricks. She demonstrated one trick by holding a dog biscuit between her lips and allowing each pit bull to eat it out of her mouth. She said Mia is afraid of her 12-week-old cat.
She whips her and Mia runs with her tail between her legs, Pauley said.
Austin Branch, 6, lives nearby and said when he first met the dogs, he was scared but soon learned they are friendly.
They might lick you to death, he said.
However, another neighbor, previously told The State Journal the dogs had been a problem in the neighborhood for some time.
Everybodys afraid of them, said Glenna Eastman, 63, of 107 Spring St.
Kimberly Rose said she enjoys taking her dogs for a walk and letting them explore the countryside.
Her daughter Melanie Carrier, 16, said Tank likes to sing along to music, and Elvis songs are his favorite. He jumped up and ate a dandelion flower from her hand when Carrier tried to blow the seeds into the air.
Kimberly Rose said her attorney told her not to discuss with reporters the events on April 1 or her case scheduled for later this month in Franklin District Court.
She faces two counts of harboring a vicious animal. Her daughter, Whitney Rose, 18, pleaded guilty to charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in April. She was fined and received a suspended jail sentence.
According to police, Whitney Rose screamed at police and tried to run when they arrested her.
County Attorney Rick Sparks said hes handling several other cases where dogs have bitten mail carriers.
Im taking this very seriously, he said.
FYI, if you have a ‘Beware of Dog’ sign at your home, GET RID OF IT!
We replaced the ‘beware of dogs’ sign on our gate with one that says ‘Please keep gate closed, Dogs on Premises’ on the advice of our attorney.
‘Beware’ implies in a court you KNEW there was a problem with YOUR DOGS folks - no matter if thats true or not, you get hit with it in the event of a lawsuit.
Pit Bulls are great dogs. Only the ignorant think otherwise.
bump for later
They’re such wonderful dogs that you sought out an attorney’s for fear of the liability your beast may cause you?
I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.
Three times today, in fact.
They’re such wonderful dogs that you sought out an attorney’s ADVICE for fear of the liability your beast may cause you?
Ahhhh, the resident pit bull hater! Excellent!
I don’t own a pit bull, friend. That will soon change when our 15 year old Rottweiller/Shepard mix passes on - hopefully many years from now, but probably sooner.
Second, where in my post did I say ‘sought out my attorney’s advice’? I didn’t. It was ‘in passing’ among friends.
That ‘advice’ applies to ANY DOG OWNER.
Because some people are so ate up with ignorance they’ll do and say just about anything...like ‘the dog made me fall down and hurt my arm, but didn’t bite me’ (so I can’t prove the dogs did this).
Dog licks self on butt hole.
Dog lover licks dog on mouth.
Nuff said about dog lovers.
my daughter and son-in-law rescued a pit from a shelter. She is the sweetest thing ever, it is sad to see people shy away from her because of her breed. Now my little mini schnauzzers.. everyone aproaches them because they seem harmless..but they take their role as my guardian very seriously, they would never harm anyone, but they don’t like strangers.
I was just going ask if anyone had heard this before.
Our local pet store had stopped selling “beware of dog” signs in favor of “dog on premises” because of what your lawyer has said.
I must be mighty ignorant then.
But then again, I don't know of anyone who has been bitten by a dead pit bull, lots of folks have been mauled by live ones.

Exactly. They are extremely loving animals, but like any animal can be ‘taught’ to be vicious. The problem isn’t the breed, as many ignorant of the topic like to state, the problem is humans that are abusive idiots.
No different than children, when you get right down to it. No child is born with ‘hate’ its learned, usually in the home.
Same with any breed of dog. There are unusual exceptions, mental illness, diseases, and such, that make 1% ‘nuts’...again thats true among humans, or just about any other animal you can name.
Its been broadcast in almost every ‘dog journal’ of record the past couple of years.
Repeat after me... Islam is a religion of love and peace.
Are all the kids that get mauled ignorant?
Pit Bulls are bred to be aggressive and to do damage, just as Labs are bred to be swimmers and retrievers. You don't have to train a Lab to retrieve and you don't have to train a Pit to be aggressive, you have to train them not to be. Any dog that will kill you without proper training and handling is a big risk. Risks can be acceptable, but many of those affected don't appear to be getting a vote.
Pit Bulls have their purpose, but that purpose isn't to be a lap dog. To say that a Pit is no more likely to do unwanted harm is to ignore both statistics and hundreds of years of canine breeding practices.

More people will die from falling off horses this year that act ‘unruly’. You want them executed>? If not, why not?
I don’t know of anyone killed by a dead human, yet they kill more humans in this country than ALL animals combined, every single year.
Your theory simply isn’t valid, friend, as I’m sure you can see. You don’t like pits, don’t get one. No problem.
And at the same time, you see one on your property, I have no problem with you shooting it. Its the owners responsiblity to maintain control of their dog, at all times. If they don’t, and it comes onto your land, you gotta do what you think is best for you and your family.
I’ve owned ‘large dogs’ most of my 50 years, and I’ve never had a problem, with one exception, and that was a dog that had a rare phenomena known to vets as ‘red rage’. I had to put our ‘Lucy’ down one year ago this month because of it.
Black lab, loving and kind. But she wasn’t stable enough, and we had to do what we had to do, as responsible dog owners. It still hurts, my wife and I don’t talk about it.
‘Pit Bulls are great dogs. Only the ignorant think otherwise.
Are all the kids that get mauled ignorant?’
Are you going to apply this absurd logic to homicide victims killed by male HUMANS?
Doubt it. When you have something rational on the topic, I’ll respond. Till then....
