The poor kid. I remember reading his girls’ greatest fear was that they would some day find their father dead from drinking.

...registered a mind-numbing 0.39 blood alcohol level...Heh heh. I wish I'd written that.

How great for the kids, to find daddy passed out and almost dead. The guy is leaving a great legacy for his family, a great example for them to follow. Unfortunately, too many kids do just that.

The article also says “The legal limit in California is 0.08.” That is the first I have heard that it is illegal to be drunk at home.

I really don't know anything about Hasselhoff, but he obviously has some major problems with alcohol.
It's a tragedy to have a cross like that to bear, hopefully he can find his way to recovery.

He will be lucky if he doesn’t have brain damage.

registered a mind-numbing 0.39 blood alcohol level I clocked in at 0.396 after I totaled my car. I spent three days in detox and have quit for good (1963 days and counting).

When the Hoff dies (hopefully that won’t be anytime soon), will Germany order their flags to fly at half-staff?

This
Wikipedia page indicates that fatal alcohol poisoning occurs at BAC levels ">0.40". Scott Krueger, an MIT undergrad who died of alcohol poisoning in 1997, had a BAC of 0.41.

We arrested a female about 20 years ago who was a .46 via a blood test after she wrecked her car. She was very much alive.

Congratulations on surviving and getting clean. It's a tough thing to do.
BTW, here are the reactions from .25 to .4:
Nearly total loss of motor functions
Markedly decreased response to stimuli
Marked muscular incoordination; inability to stand or walk
Vomiting; incontinence of urine and stool
Decreased consciousness; sleep or stupor
From 0.35-0.50
Complete unconsciousness and depressed or absent reflexes
Impairment of circulation and respiration and low body temperature
Incontinence and possible
DEATH
The overlap is because of different reactions by different people. For Hasselhhoff to remain conscious long enough to get that drunk indicates his body has developed a pretty good resistance to alcohol. Some drunks will get DTs if they drop down to .08, the legal limit for intoxication.

There's help in the form of a pill called "naltrexone".
It totally takes away the desire to drink. AND it has a great success rate. Unfortunately, Rehab centers don't believe in using it. I think it's because it isn't good for their own business $$$$$$
