Cajun jockeys a rare breed
I picked the wrong 50-1 “bird” horse! (#17, Summer Bird). I think Summer Bird ran 5th.

I actually wrote his number down when I first started looking at superfectas...that ticket would have cost me 15 grand...so he was one of the first colts I tossed...looking back, it would have been a pretty good investment.
I tossed him also as my long shot. I had another as a show and he came in sixth I believe. I did not have a feeling the favorites could handle the track and distance.
I thought I saw the trainer had OC weapon in his belt, but I could not be sure. Did any one else see that?
No. Didn’t see that.
Biggest payout I ever got (nothing to write home about, but something meaningful at the time) was when I noticed some claimer in a stakes race where he didn’t belong. Way outclassed. It just seemed too odd and worth a small wager. Of course, later it seemed like it would have been worth a bigger one.
The guy with the broken leg - yeah, he was packin’. Gotta love it! (I noticed it right before he told the guy “...and I won’t have to answer stupid questions about driving here...” or whatever that was!
One thing I thought odd. He gave a HUGE congrats to the jockey, as would be expected. But not even a pat on the head for the horse.
I know I’m viewing it as a “pet” owner where a pat on the head to a dog that does well is common. I suppose this is all business and the horse is just a tool. But still! (I know, too many Disney movies.)
This was just one of those flukes. No sour grapes here, not really upset over my losses...just one of those things. I’ll tell everyone right now, I won’t bet this horse in the Preakness.
Thanks I wasn’t sure, I though I saw it on his right just past the buckle when he was interviewed after the race. The horse won because he had the speed, stamina and a good jock that took him the short way. That takes skill to get the horse through a hole like that.
He was right to credit the jock and prior trainer that had qualified the horse. The horse was still hyped and a pet may or may not be a good idea. I saw the horse jump every time Borel smacked him on the neck. That horse was ready to run again and had to be pulled down after the race. Good sign for the Preakness.
Note: that “also ran” list included in the payoff chart I just posted is NOT in order of finish. Because I know for a fact that the favorite “Friesan Fire” ran next to last. Also, Summer Bird ran 5th or 6th.

Good observation - another reason why I’m not a horse trainer!! Sure was a fun race.
Thanks. That was really interesting! It seems most jockeys nowadays are of spanish background and it was good to read about the others.
