A lawyer who reportedly was laid off earlier this week at Kilpatrick Stockton apparently committed suicide this morning at the firm's Washington, D.C., office.
Mark Levy, a 59-year-old Yale Law School graduate who headed the firm's Supreme Court and appellate advocacy practice group, died this morning at the firm's office, according to an e-mailed statement from the firm's co-managing partner and a report in Legal Times. Levy also worked in the U.S. Department of Justice as a senior political appointee during the Clinton administration.
The firm doesn't address Levy's cause of death, but Legal Times indicates that he committed suicide, citing a metropolitan police report that a male committed suicide this morning in the same Washington, D.C., block. According to Above the Law, the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

The firearm was illegal, right, since it was in DC?
So if anyone in the firm knew about it and didn't report it they could be subject to legal consequences?
Gun control for the average citizen but not for the elite in Congress or in high-powered law firms?

Reports are that the handgun was registered to him in Maryland.
Bringing it into DC to commit suicide is double-extra-illegal.

Well, Mr. Sensitive, did you even once consider the fact that a perfectly functioning firearm is now covered in a corrosive solution?

Most lawyers would have just filed a lawsuit. I guess he figured he sucked so bad he wouldn’t win, so he went with Plan B.

Whatever his position on gun control - the position you argue as a lawyer is not always what you really believe, so it's hard to tell here - what a tragic waste.
Apparently he was given 48 hours notice of his termination. Makes you wonder if the firm is rethinking how they handled this.
Obviously there was more going on in Levy's life before the layoff. And it's sobering to realize - if a superstar like this guy can get axed, no one is really safe. Or at least not in the legal community.
To: The KG9 Kid
Levy also worked for Sam Alito in the Reagan Justice Department - some interesting twists in his legal career, that’s for sure.

To turn Josef Stalin's infamous quote on it's head, "Millions of deaths are a tragedy, one death is a statistic."
He's just become another statistic that the anti-gunners will use when they compile the yearly deaths related to firearms. I suppose it's his last service to the Brady Campaign.
Blessings and best wishes for his family.
To: The Iguana
Yeah, he worked for Samuel Alito just long enough to compile a double-agent character assassination report for the Senate Judiciary Committee that tried to shoot down the Alito nomination.
That's my guess. You bet they're that dirty.
To: The KG9 Kid
Man. Hopefully thousands of more lawyers will follow his lead.
