Humane Society of the United States helps transport cats from the wild to a California sanctuary:Sheldon, an orange tabby born in the wild, is one of seven feral cats who have been rescued from San Nicolas Island, off the Southern California coast, where plans are in place to eradicate the feline population to preserve the native species.
These seven island cats have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated and checked by a veterinarian and are now living at a sanctuary north of Los Angeles. Getting these cats off the Navy-owned island and taking them to an approved facility was part of a deal between the U.S. government and the Humane Society of the United States.
Nancy Peterson, cat programs manager for the HSUS, said that any cats who are found to be in good health will be allowed to be transported to a place that includes a secure enclosure, where the cats cant harm other animals or be harmed themselves.
An estimated 100-200 cats live on San Nicolas Island, which is about 60 miles off the Southern California coast and provides nesting habitat for numerous native seabirds and shorebirds, as well as other threatened species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service had determined the feral cats were to be trapped and euthanized to help restore the native wildlife.
Shelly Dell, registered veterinary technician, cares for one of the San Nicolas Island feral cats.
The bleak terrain of San Nicolas Island, where the feral cats came from.
Like cats my own darn self, have one that thinks he owns the family and dogs.
With that said I’m not too fond of people who let their cats roam or with feral cats.
They do a job on bird populations.
Biggirl BUMP!
And it only cost the taxpayers a million dollars each?
Hi S and A, at least there is a humane rescue and the hope to get the cats away from danger.=^..^=
Thanks for the bump!=^..^=
That’ BS....everything else does ‘a job’ opn bird population...including the air planes now. Do you use chemicals in your yard? I’m so sick of people saying this....such ignorance. And don’t give me stats from the bird people...they’re bogus. Use your common sense...urbane sprawlm chemicals, weather events, other animsla like raccoons who look for eggs in trees, etc., other birds like hawks who eat the eggs, the chemicals sprayed from the airplanes like in florida for mosquitos twice a year, ....jebus....
Howdy Biggirl,
Yep. Always glad when somebody looks out for the furbabies.
Only '7' cats????? They only rescue the ones that look healthy? Real nice!!! What a waste HSUS is.
Isn’t this the “Island of the Blue Dolphins” island?
I got to wonder how they ever got there. From what I saw on the island, there are no permanent residents. Everyone flies in, some stay a day or a bit more, but don’t “live” there.
Yes. One and the same.
I was stationed there when I was in the Navy in 1967-8.
I loved it. It was a very interesting place to hike.
Then buy yourself a G** D***** plane ticket and go 'rescue' the little furballs yourself.

There have been reports of the Humane Society of the United States (Important: not to be confused with your local Humane Society) taking in strays, killing them immediately without triage for adoptables, and dumping them in dumpsters behind businesses.
"Authorities in Ahoskie,North Carolina dropped a disturbing bombshell yesterday with the news that they had charged two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty. PeTA's Andrew Cook and Adria Hinkle were arrested lateWednesday night after police saw them dump bags containing seven dead puppies and 11 other dead animals in a grocery store's dumpster.Their PeTA-owned van, seized by police, contained another 13 animal bodies. People donate to HSUS to do a good and complete job. Not a half-a$$ed one to get their name in the paper. I do my part....what do you do.
I quite routinely humanely trap feral cats and turn them over to the County Animal Shelter.

What you trap are not just ferals.....your cruel. Do you trap birds too? They are the ones bringing diseases to your yard...
It's illegal in my jurisdiction to allow any dog or cat to roam freely. What I'm doing is not cruel. Cruel is allowing housepets to roam out of doors.
I'm sick of seeing dead dogs and cats on the side of the road. Anyone who permits their housepet to go outside unsupervised is not only irresponsible, they're breaking the law.
In my jurisdiction they can and will be charged with a misdemeanor.
Keep your animals indoors or on a leash. Have them microchipped in case they get out and someone finds them and turns them over to Animal Control.
Anything less is not only irresponsible and cruel, it's illegal.
Have a pleasant day.
