NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court's current term.
The court has completed hearing oral arguments for the year and will be issuing rulings and opinions until the end of June.
Souter is expected to remain on the bench until a successor has been chosen and confirmed, which may or may not be accomplished before the court reconvenes in October.
“Why is it that the libs never get burned with a Souter like we did? (IE: Someone we thought was OK when Bush 41 nominated him)”
When Warren Rudman was out there backing him, I thought Souter would be a disaster.
White (appointed by Kennedy) and Frankfurter (by FDR) turned out a lot more conservative than liberals thought they’d be. But yes, it seems that it’s always the conservative appointees who “grow” - that is, go left.
Justice Anthony “Flipper” Kennedy being a good example.
No net loss. A Lib will replace a Lib.
Jamie Gorelick.
Because no matter how conservative the judge, once they get to Washington the urge to seek the clucking approval of the media/intellectual elite and the cocktail circuit pulls them left. It’s like gravity.
