Cowell to Boyle: "Get yourself together"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television's Simon Cowell said on Friday he was embarrassed at his initial reaction to singing sensation Susan Boyle, but warned that just because she is a hit with fans, she is not a winner yet. Cowell, the creator and a judge on "Britain's Got Talent," said he was fed up with stories about the hair, eyebrows and cats of the never-married 47-year-old Boyle, and he urged her to focus now on winning the television talent competition.

"She has got four weeks to prepare for the biggest night of her life, and she has got to sing better than she sang before with all those expectations on her. But it could all go horribly wrong for her because there are so many other distractions," Cowell told TV reporters in Los Angeles. "Get yourself together sweetheart for the big one -- the semi-final. Shut the door, choose the right song and come back as who you are, not who you want to be," he said. Boyle, a spinster who lives alone with her cat, became one of the world's hottest celebrities last week after surprising judges with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" on the popular talent show. Her performance has been watched over 50 million times on YouTube.

I’m not an “Idol” fan, but this gal reminds me of Sarah Palin, in that I think she is who she is, and win or lose, she’ll remain true to herself.

Overall it’s good advice but why must he always sound so arrogant? Why doesn’t he get up there and perform sometime?

He’s right, but Cowell has a way of flagellating contestants who impress him first time around, and then
start to disappoint. He does it every season with AI here in the States. He’s always right, but it was his initial overenthusiasm that’s to blame, NOT the contestant’s lack of ultimately Idol-worthiness. This season he did the same thing with Megan Joy and Lil Rounds, both of whom didn’t really deserve to go on competing with the final remaining contestants. Susan Boyle may rise to the occasion though.
On the other hand, and more likely, she may just be happy with her 3- 6 months of fame, which may be all she can squeeze out of this. The “music business” is what it is, and people like Susan Boyle are what they are, just as we, the audience, are, and we both know why Susan Boyle was a phenom instantly, and why we’d support her, not for 10 or 20 years, but for “a while”.

Boyle was interviewed on Fox News and said “the show found her, asked her to perform”. This was all planned from the beginning, she will win and everyone involved will make lots of $:)

The guy makes over $50M a year and all he has to do is lounge around in a t-shirt and criticize people. Not a bad gig. Good on ‘im!

That doesn’t mean the 3 biggest judges knew anything about her, only that the first rung of judges knew she sang well and encouraged her to perform. She tried out for the X Factor and she said, “They took one look at me and decided I didn’t have the X Factor”. She said if she didn’t do well on Britain’s Got Talent that she would give up singing for the rest of her life. Glad it worked out differently!

"She has got four weeks to prepare for the biggest night of her life, and she has got to sing better than she sang before with all those expectations on her. But it could all go horribly wrong for her because there are so many other distractions,"

Actually, I think the drawn out time line of the show will probably hurt Susan Boyle. The reaction to her was real, and large numbers of people would like to hear more of her singing. Winning or not winning Britain's Got Talent is probably far less important than recording a CD of great songs and offering it to the public.

And Simon's blather here is pointlessly arrogant and of little value.

I don’t think you can fault him for “over enthusiasm” at the beginning. He shows it so rarely anyway. ;) If you sit and listen to a bunch of terrible singers and then some come by who seem passable you’d probably get a bit enthused too. Plus every season there are contestants who can’t keep up with the pressure or in Lil Rounds’ case got bad advice about what songs to sing and how to sing them. She impressed in the beginning but then tried to copy cat others. They are looking for Originality above everything else, not karaoke acts. Susan Boyle had Originality, that’s why they all lit up when she started to sing.

I’m thinking she could get a tech-savvy friend and record singles in her living room, set up a store on the Internet, and charge mabye 50 cents a download and make pretty decent money.

But that’s just me.
