LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television's Simon Cowell said on Friday he was embarrassed at his initial reaction to singing sensation Susan Boyle, but warned that just because she is a hit with fans, she is not a winner yet. Cowell, the creator and a judge on "Britain's Got Talent," said he was fed up with stories about the hair, eyebrows and cats of the never-married 47-year-old Boyle, and he urged her to focus now on winning the television talent competition.
"She has got four weeks to prepare for the biggest night of her life, and she has got to sing better than she sang before with all those expectations on her. But it could all go horribly wrong for her because there are so many other distractions," Cowell told TV reporters in Los Angeles. "Get yourself together sweetheart for the big one -- the semi-final. Shut the door, choose the right song and come back as who you are, not who you want to be," he said. Boyle, a spinster who lives alone with her cat, became one of the world's hottest celebrities last week after surprising judges with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" on the popular talent show. Her performance has been watched over 50 million times on YouTube.

“She is a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.”
Well, I judge her to be Not Guilty!
She will now be able to live her dream. She will sing before many audiences now. Additionally, she will earn enough money to live in comfort for the rest of her life.
Susan has said she is going to help her siblings, and I am sure her church and village will benefit from her generosity, also.
All good things will come from Susan, not the least of which will be the wonderful entertainment she will provide in the following years. I, for one, will purchase her CD’s.
Doesn’t the show do auditions in varied places, like AI? She could very well have been encouraged by someone who’d contacted the program and asked that she be auditioned, knowing her lovely voice. Nothing sinister about that.
I don't know about the prep part of it, but it certainly won't affect her singing. She's had a lovely voice for years, judging by the audio from her version of "Cry Me A River" from that CD that was made for a charity fundraiser almost 10 years ago.
Absolutely agree. Doesn’t matter what happens on Simon’s show, someone will sign her to a contract and I will gladly purchase her first cd. Love her voice.
Considering his record of finding talent, why take a pay cut by performing?
“...someone will sign her to a contract...”
Miss Boyle and Cowell are already in negotiations to sign a contract. This was publicized the day after her appearance on the Brit talent show.
Does Cowell really believe that Boyle has to win that competition to get rich? Can anyone outside the U.K name any of the other contestants? Her future is secured based on one video. Even if she just has one cd out of it, she’ll earn millions.
He wouldn’t have to take a pay cut. Just get up there once in awhile and show how well HE sings. He could even be paid for it. Then let all of US be the judges. :)
There is absolutely zero correlation between having a singing voice and knowing talent.
You must consider his comments as criticism; I take his comments as constructive criticism and I think he gave Susan Boyle good advice. Even on American Idol the contestants value his opinion the most...if they're smart. She is getting side-tracked and needs to focus on the competition.
I read somewhere, some time ago that Simon is worth a hundred million--$$ or lbs. I don't remember.
I'm just glad he put Il Divo together. I love them!
I hope Simon sticks with finding talent.
However, when Shaheen (the 12-year-old boy) sang, all three judges were on their feet. Simon must now be worried that Susan Boyle might win out over Shaheen. So Simon is now signalling very strongly, by backpedalling on his initial reaction to Susan Boyle. He wants Shaheen to win. I have never heard of a judge backpedalling like this before the competition has even begun! It seems unfair and underhanded.
I listened to Shaheen, and was underwhelmed with his voice. The usual melismatics. And his voice was not even at the level of Michael Jackson when he was a child (he sang a Jackson 5 song). He does have a nice personality, though. He seems very fair-minded. I'd have to dig to get his actual quotes, but I was impressed with him as a person.
I read a news article about what he makes, something around 35 million from American Idol, 15 million from Britain’s Got Talent and another 10 million from The X Factor. The same article stated he got his start in show business singing. So I say, “Let’s hear YOU sing, Simon” so we can all judge YOU. :)
She needs to do what she has always done.
The kid didn’t impress me. Susan did. She has suffered in her life which gives her voice a maturity and spiritually a little kid will not have. My vote is for Susan.
spirituality, I meant to write.
It definitely reconfirms that Susan is, indeed, a talented singer. I love this version, and her voice is beautiful and very easy to listen to ....unlike Streisand, who can sound screechy and screamy after awhile, in spite of her talent.
I'm thinking a CD of religious music and Christmas music would do well, also. Just a few CD's, with a good agent who's not out to mess her over, and she would be set for life, AND help take care of her older siblings.
