The first $136 million from the hotelier Leona Helmsleys disputed multibillion-dollar estate has been distributed, trustees announced on Tuesday, but the bulk went to medical centers instead of dogs. Only $1 million of the estate, valued at about $5 billion, was donated to the care of dogs, which Mrs. Helmsley had designated as her primary beneficiary. Aw, that’s not right! :-(
If she wanted her estate to go to benefit dogs, then that is exactly what should have happened. To only give 1% or less of her money left behind to dog related charities is insulting to her wishes.

I hope all the big animal welfare groups band together and sue the pants off these trustees. Just imagine the kickbacks they’re getting for diverting all this money to medical conglomerates, instead of putting it where the deceased obviously wanted it. Mrs. Helmsley didn’t get along with humans, and she wanted the bulk of her estate to go to dogs. The $12 million she specified for her own little doggie Trouble, is pretty solid evidence that she intended for huge amounts to go to dogs.
I find it disturbing that it is so easy to subvert any person’s will. Whatever is written must be respected.

That is where she screwed up. She gave the Trustees free reign to give to whatever causes they deemed proper. Apparently the court read the directives that way and has approved all the transfers as stated.
