ST. LOUIS --A man who shot and killed a pit bull on the street this morning told police it had been attacking his own dog.
St. Louis police say the man called 911 to tell them what he'd done.
He told officers that the pit bull was attacking his dog and another one.
A department spokeswoman said she didn't have any further details on who owned the dead dog or if it had been on a leash.
It happened about 7:30 a.m.

Can’t you defend shooting a dog that wasn’t attacking?
An unleashed dog sniffing a leashed dog is a highly dangerous situation. Maybe the owner of the leashed dog knows his dog is dog aggressive and would try to bite the pit bull. No sense in waiting for that to happen.
Do you by any chance have dogs that you allow to roam?
Pit bulls on the loose, to me are like rattlesnakes....they get shot on the spot. If the owner has a problem with it, then maybe he should have it fenced or on a leash like my dogs. I understand that, unlike a weapon, dogs have a mind of their own and can “go off”. I take responsibility for my potentially dangerous dogs and other people should to.
You are out of luck as I do not own a dog but my gun rights could be jeopardized by nuts who shoots first and thinks about it later.

NOTE TO ATF AGENTS! YES! I HAVE AN APPROVED FORM 4! (and shooting feral dogs is legal (and highly approved) where I live, esp. loose pit bulls).

Why do all of you northerners assume we are "shooting up city streets" and live in cities? Ya'll assume too much, as usual on where we, in the "fly over country" live, and always try to dictate what we can/cant do.
I dare you to come to Arkansas and try to tell some meth-heads down the street to lock up their pit bull. They are wound up tighter than a $2.00 watch and will shoot you first. THAT is why I systematically shoot pitbulls on site, because they are just as feral and dangerous as their meth-head owners.
When owners call the cops down here about "someone shooting their dog", the cop's first question is, "Did the shooter come into your home and shoot your dog?" If not, then they tell you to go get another dog and keep it leashed/fenced next time.

Golly! Guess who made the assumptions! I live on an 80 acre farm, not in a city. I have cows down the road. But you keep thinking you're the only one in flyover country with your meth heads down the block. We don't even have blocks. Oh Lord, I'm still laughing!

You knowledge of the the law is lacking.
If someone else's dog comes onto my property and even appears to be running my pets or livestock, I have the legal right to shoot it. Not only that, I have the right to demand reimbursement for the bullet.

Read the story. The dog was shot on a public street. Witnesses said it did not attack. It wasn’t “running” anything. Read the facts.

If you have hoofed animals, you shoot, shovel and shut up..But it is legal...Had a neighbor that shot a dog that got in his turkey pen and killed them...It cost his insurance company 2000 dollars...Birds are not covered by the laws of Michigan. We buried a stray, no collar, trying to get into the pasture with ours goats and a ewe...Did feel a bit sorry, but you do what you have to do.

One way to look at it: taking out a pit bull wandering free on a public street before it savages another living thing is like taking out a terrorist before he can detonate a roadside bomb.
It can be argued that breed of dog is too vicious and hair-trigger in temperament to wait until it actually has its vise grip jaws around the throat of another dog. The owner should be fined heavily for not keeping his pit bull from running free on a public street.
