Russian Flying Fortresses

Category: Funny, History |

Russian flying fortress 1

In 1930s Russian army was … by the idea of creating huge planes. At that times they were proposed to have as much propellers as possible to help carrying those huge flying fortresses into the air, jet propulsion has not been implemented at those times yet.

Not much photos were saved since that times, because of the high secrecy levels of such projects and because a lot of time passed already. Still on the photo below you can see one of such planes - a heavy bomber K-7.

Now modern history lovers in Russia try to reconstruct according the plans left in once to be top-secret Russian army archives their look in full color. This is one example based on ideas of Russian aviation engineers of that times.

Thats like out of a nightmare after watching a Sky Pilot movie.

Too weird to imagine a future of super flying fortresses, but this would make an awesome feature in another alternate history movie.

Looks like the design has a fair amount of aero drag.

It might have worked on some scale except for the fact of those wimpy engines swinging 2 bladed props.

Can you imagine instead the counter props that the current Bears have instead?

Reminds me of a cruise liner except it's designed for flying and not sailing.

I’m not an aviation expert, but my first thought was that I wonder if this thing could float because it sure doesn’t look like it would fly.

That’s the kind of thing I see when I polish off a ten beers and quart of plastic bottle vodka.

You forgot about the Tu-160 Blackjack, but thats okay.

As to the Tu-95 in your picture, I wonder if they give them a choice ‘You can crew on the Tu-95, or you can go to into a Siberian prison’

The actual plane appears to have been considerably smaller than the artists renderings.

Here's the Tupelov ANT 20 "Maxim Gorky". This beast was designed as a flying propaganda studio. Printing plant, movie theaters, bringing soviet propaganda to the hinterland....

I always thought that it was somehow ironic that the designation for the giant pre-war Soviet aircraft was Ant. The Ant-20 was probably my favorite, if only because it actually flew fairly well, for what was basically a propaganda stunt.

I once spoke to some Norwegian air defenders at Bodo that had intecepted these beasts. As they neared these birds they had trouble hearing any calls on their radio headset because the noise was deafening.
