In a week, Susan Boyle has gone from karaoke and her local church choir to global fame and an invitation to the Oprah Winfrey show. The frumpy 47-year-old, who says she's never been kissed, has gained celebrity fans and millions of admirers including a fair number of men since she wowed judges on the TV show "Britain's Got Talent." Her fame has been fueled by new technology, with a clip of her performance viewed more than 12 million times on Google's YouTube video site. "Susan can't help herself, she just sings whenever she can sing," said Jackie Russell, the manager of the Happy Valley Hotel in Blackburn, Scotland, where Boyle occasionally sings karaoke. "We weren't surprised by her talent, but we were surprised by the reaction around the world."

I think the young woman at 1:25 is the most unpopular person in Britain right about now.

A lovely voice and great passion. I hope she moves on, but even if she doesn’t, people have heard something wonderful.

One of the most spectactular things I ever heard in my life was a music teacher in a small city in Spain singing (in English) “Dido’s Lament,” that wonderful aria from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

The kids that she taught had all sung or played whatever it was she had taught them. Most of the other people at the concert were family or friends of students, and they weren’t really there to hear her. But then she came out and sang this aria, accompanied by one of her advanced students, and jaws dropped.

It was stunning. I’ve never heard it again that way, I never will hear it again, but it was one of those transforming musical moments.

I found Paul Potts initial performance on Britain's Got Talent (2007) far more moving, stunning, etc. The reaction from the judges and the audience was priceless.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA.

But I was also blown away by Susan. Amazing talent.

I have seen it about ten times, and I still cry every time I see it.

My son calls my tears “Diego moments” as in the cartoon Ice Age. Yes, I cried at a cartoon...there is no hope for me. I also cried this summer when I called John Murtha’s office and realized, after talking to his rude, elitist phone person that my republic was GONE!

Could it be that the world is fed up with the brats and misfits the entertainment industry throws at us and elevates to star status?

What a blessing. And some wish that people with mental disabilities should not be born. It’s insane, all that we would miss, if we only kept the people with 125 and up IQs.

Everyone should see her singing. This video goes to show that an ass of an MTV pop-culture crowd the world has become as they snicker at her for not being pretty or young. She knocks them out of their chairs with an amazing voice.

Well, ok, I am not THAT bad...

But the muse - and the music - always does it.

I would pay real money to see that lady sing phantom.

I’d pay to hear her sing anything, and perversely, I hope they don’t change a thing about her looks.

According to Wikipedia, she has a learning disability due to oxygen deprivation prior to birth. She’s also a church volunteer, and wears her mother’s ring after caring for her until her death.

This woman appears to be a saint. She certainly has an angel’s voice.
