NEW YORK — John Madden is calling it quits.

NBC said Thursday that the burly ex-coach who has been one of pro football's top broadcast analysts has decided to retire. The 73-year-old Madden has been working for the past three seasons on NBC's Sunday night NFL game. His last telecast was the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh.

After he ends his broadcasting career, he'll be heard a lot less on TV.

And I'll miss him.

I have to wonder if working at NBC had anything to do with John's decision.

I mean I can't imagine following the always obnoxious, moronic, boor to end all boor Keith Overbite who has to be an embarrassment to anyone even remotely associated.

That'd be enough to do it for me, that's for damned sure.

Look at some ESPN classics to see Madden in his coaching years. He was really something. He will always have standing with me for those two minute wins with Kenny Stabler.

Godspeed, John. Enjoy.

Madden was one of my few reasons for watching SNF. I have never and will never watch a second of NBC's pregame or halftime commentary, because of Olberfuehrer. Too bad, too, because I've always liked Bob Costas.

But the principle is more important. I just simply refuse to patronize the presence of anyone who would toss childish insults at the President of the U.S. every day for 8 years, thus giving enemies like Hugo Chavez loads of talking points. As far as I'm concerned, Olberfuehrer has spent the last 8 years giving aid and comfort to enemies. For that, he will never be forgiven.

I saw some old threads where people were ragging on Madden for his malapropism and sometimes obvious statements. I think that stuff was part of his charm, to the point where a comedian was able to get famous imitating it. This guy was like your Dad’s drinking buddy that you run into at the hardware store. Plus he was old school and always gave some insight into what was going on in the trenches. And give him a break on that Pat’s Super Bowl drive. He was always a conservative coach so he made the conservative call. Football won’t be the same without him.

I give Madden a lot of credit. Fact is, I'm not an enormous football fan -- I don't watch that many games. Sometimes, having an announcer saying all of the "obvious" things is a real benefit, because some of the folks sitting at home might actually need these things pointed out.

One of my pet peeves is where there is a hobby, sport, or activity where all of those involved seem to speak a secret language. Man, if you're not already a member of the fraternity, it's a big, unappealing mystery and you can really feel unwelcome. And then the club is surprised that so few people want to join their fun.

Madden was never one of those guys. He loved football, he wanted other people to love football, and he did everything he could to invite people in, explain what was going on, and help people have a good time.

"Madden was one of my few reasons for watching SNF."

You & I, both. ;^)
We could bet we're hardly alone, too.
I nearly sprain my wrist going for the remote control to change the channel the instant halftime begins, no exceptions, ever. I simply will not, cannot tolerate so much as one nanosecond of that strange character.

"I have never and will never watch a second of NBC's pregame or halftime commentary, because of Olberfuehrer."

Odd, isn't it.
NBC has to know the flake Olberdumby thoroughly alienates at least half their audience, heck so must the advertisers!! Yet, they persist. Very odd, indeed.

"Too bad, too, because I've always liked Bob Costas. But the principle is more important."

Where have YOU been all my life, Lady? {g}

We could be identical twins given the clarity of your sage POV. ;^)
