It's been a year and a half since the new-age bluegrass virtuosos from Nickel Creek went their separate ways, and Sara Watkins, former fiddle player and vocalist for the group, is finally releasing her solo debut.
Band members Watkins, her brother Sean and Chris Thile split up in 2007 after 18 years of performing together, each going on to explore separate projects. While all three were child prodigies, mandolinist Thile always overshadowed the talented brother-sister duo with his lightning-fast fingers and rock star stage attitude. But now, with a new band, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones as producer and her own laid-back style, it's Watkins' turn to rock.
Watkins showed off some vocal talent as a part of Nickel Creek, but while listening to her solo effort, it's clear she was Nickel Creek's hidden secret. She doesn't have the gritty female vocals of acts such as KT Tunstall and Natasha Bedingfield, or the deep, sultry sound of Amy Winehouse or Adele, but her voice is light and sweet. She can match it perfectly to the instruments, melodies and various genres she pairs it with....
Watkins tackles several other covers throughout the disc, including Jimmie Rodgers' "Any Old Time" and Norman Blake's "Lord Won't You Help Me," but the tunes she penned herself are the ones that show her bright future as a solo artist.
The two instrumentals, "Freiderick" and "Jefferson," are deeply rooted in Watkins' bluegrass background and show off her penchant for composition. Still, the best of the originals is "Will We Go," a sweetly simple guitar and fiddle duet with harmonized vocals that give a subtle nod to the origins of bluegrass as a high, lonesome sound....

Huge fan. Didn’t know she had an album out now though. Will have to pick it up shortly.
Did you ever have the opportunity to catch Nickel Creek live? Amazing talent!
I saw them three times. They’re really good in concert. :-)
