Where to live: A beer drinkers' guide

Trying to find the ideal place to live? Statistics gathered by The Brewers Association might help you decide. It calculated the number of breweries in each state and then divided that number into the population of each state. This produced a ratio of breweries to residents. Vermont is the state with the best ratio: one brewery for every 32,698 residents. As the above picture shows, Vermont also produces a lot of maple syrup. I guess you could convert the maple syrup buckets to growlers for beer. The other top four states were Montana, Oregon, Maine and Colorado. Maryland has 21 breweries, two more than top-finishing Vermont. But our populations is so much larger than Vermont's that our brewery-per-capita number ends up as one for every 268,267 residents. This puts us 32nd among the 50 states. Delaware, with 7 breweries, ranked 9th. Pennsylvania, with 75 breweries, ranked 20th. Virginia, with 32 breweries, ranked 30th. California, the state with the most breweries (221), ranked 21st. Mississippi with only one brewery for its 2.9 million residents, finished last. There is a link on the Brewers Association page to a PDF that ranks each of the 50 states. Would the number of breweries per capita figure in your decision about where to live?

Diehard,

Do you know any NZ brews that are exported here?

I would be interested in tasting a few.

Regards,
AR

I used to live in Baton Rouge. Wish I had heard of these Southern Mississippi beers back then!

The brewery in Mississippi has been here only about 6 years. Their Southern Pecan has won some major awards. It is as good as any dark ale I've ever tasted, and I'm an aleaholic! Ha! I love good beer. The closest widely available ale I could compare it to is New Castle Brown Ale. In fact, I like SP better. St Pauli Girl is close, but it has a more bitter taste. SP is as smooth as silk.

Hope you get to try it one day. You will be hooked!

Only six years! That explains why I never heard of it. I left Baton Rouge in 1996. While we get some fairly good local brews up here north of Mason & Dixon’s Line, we also get crap like Rolling Rock. Abita was one of my favorites when in Baton Rouge.

Steinlager is exported to North America and should be fairly easy to find. Our other commercial brews include:

Lion Red
Tui India Pale Ale
DB Export Gold
Speights Gold
Canterbury Draft
DB Draft
DB Bitter
Waikato Draft

You may be able to find these, as they do go overseas. Harder to find will be the truly nice beer. My favorites are made by the Cock & Bull Pub. The Shakespeare Pub and Galbraiths Pub also make very good beers — these three pubs are three excellent reasons to come and visit us in New Zealand.

Cheers
DieHard

Abita is some good stuff. Their water is simply wonderful for brewing.

> Yeah and you ain't the least bit prejudiced, right?

As you would know, the beer gets better the further South you go ;-) Can't say I've tried beer from Mississippi, but "Lazy Magnolia" and "Southern Pecan" sound intriguing!

The beer is so good in NZ, I immigrated here!

My favorites!

No. Actually, I try all beers at least once. That’s just the kind of guy I am.

I have even tried Shiner which was crap, Pearl which was crap, and Lone Star which was almost crap.

The best beer in the world comes from england and belgium(trappiste ale). All the best are ales, not lagers.

I prefer imperial style stouts and trappiste tippels.

If so, you could always try something from Europe.

THe only good beer is ale. And the only great beer is ale from britain and belgium...with a very few exceptions...netherlands, germany, and america each produce one or two ales of exceptional quality.

But for the most part, you can narrow it down to two very tiny places on the planet...england and belgium...which happen to be right next to each other.

To each his own. The best beer is made in the Southern Hemisphere, but if you’re happy to drink the muck that comes from Europe, all the more Southern beer for those of us that want it.

You live in your own little world. There’s virtually nothing in the southern hemisphere...beer or otherwise. You can count on one hand all the nations of any significance.

Clearly you have never been here. Probably you would not be allowed in.

> You can count on one hand all the nations of any significance.

Let’s see... New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Samoa — you’re right! All the nations who know how to play The Rugby are in the Southern Hemisphere. And they all make great beer. And I can count ‘em on one hand!
