Why I'm Leaving Free Republic
PcTech

Posted on 04/10/2009 6:10:22 PM PDT by pctech

I am leaving Free Republic. After I post this message I will not come back and most likely ask the moderator to remove my account.

You may ask why. Today I posted a copy of a letter I received from an anti-terrorism officer in the United States Air Force. It was received through official channels but was not classified or top secret and I was granted permission to share it. It was an article concerning the possibility of a terrorist attack on American soil and it was pulled because, and I quote "Proven incorrect on snopes."

This is one time I am disagreeing with the moderator and his/her decision to pull the thread. This information was verified through official military channels and was supposed to help warn us to the imminent danger our country is in.

Instead, the moderator exercised, I felt, a lapse in judgment when he (or she) pulled the article that is in need of being disseminated. And this isn't the first time this has been done by moderators on Free Republic. While Free Republic has stood for conservative and GOP values it has also neglected it's responsibility to see that the information of the type I tried to share gets out. Instead they say it can't be verified and could be wild speculation (though I told them it was verified through official military channels) and pulled it even though I asked them not to.

So, I am saying goodbye. It was fun and I will treasure the friends I have made here on FR. Good luck to you all.

>>To be honest, and at the risk of being banned myself, the moderator authority around here is absolutely Maoist. No explanations, no justifications, just bang, disappearances of articles, people, references to “unwelcome” publications.<<

You’ve been here a month and already calling the mod a Maoist?

Maoist? Naw, Trotskyite is more like it. You know axing posts, threads without axing!

I don’t have an opinion on the article - didn’t see it.

However, I ran a small BBS in the pre-internet days and I’ve got to tell you - moderation is a pain in the ass even on a small scale, I can’t imagine doing it on a Freep scale.

You can write to the mods when you think an error has made. You can write to Jim if you think its really serious.

I’ve seen them put things on hold and check them out, I’ve seen them reverse a decision and I’ve seen them stand by a decision I disagreed with but I’ve never gotten the feeling they wouldn’t listen.

So, stay, go , its up to you, but it would be fair to consider the number of new threads and reported posts they have to deal with in a day and consider that there is going to be some error rate since we are talking about human.

>>American government school education really does leave a lot to be desired. It just cranks out one unthinking, deferring-to-authority, mentally lazy, emotional child after another, eh?<<

Actually it motivates a minority of kids to look beyond the system and take responsibility for themselves. But it would be better if we just had better education... :(

You've managed to miss every single point I've made, no matter how basic or simply phrased, and retreat to an ad hominem attack.

I didn't miss them. I dismissed them.

American government school education really does leave a lot to be desired. It just cranks out one unthinking, deferring-to-authority, mentally lazy, emotional child after another, eh?

You went to a French school?

Oh well, at least I'm spared the drudgery of ever having to hear from or respond to you again.

OK. (snort)

I hear you man. I’ve had my share of abusive Hitleresque mods on power trips deleting my posts for no good reason.

I much as I hate to say it, this thread has generated the most posts of any I've ever started, and all I had to say was "I'm leaving." Go figure....

But as it turns out Mr. Robinson himself decided not to delete my account and also reposted the early thread that was taken down. Don't know what to think at this point. Evidently I haven't left (as this post indicates) yet but I am still mulling it over. I've had invites from other conservative websites to join them because of this incident.

How true!

>>OK, I’m done talking about this. Thanks to everyone who has expressed their support for my position, and to those who gave me a critical but reasoned response (actually, I received lots of the former, and haven’t seen any of the latter). <<

Thought I’d take this first. I understand being done with a topic and won’t take offense if you don’t respond.

But since I plan to hang around here, I’m gonna address a couple of your points.

>> How long do you have to stare at the sun before you realize it’s bright?

It doesn’t take much perception or long exposure.<<

You’re entitled to form an opinion as quickly as you want. But if you enter a community and want to criticize it and get taken as constructive doing it immediately after arriving isn’t productive.

>>I don’t like seeing the exceptional quality of many posts on FR be under this Damoclesian Deus ex Machina threat. That’s all. It is counter-productive.<<

You know, its ok to have private message boards that are conservative just like its ok to have that limit to car discussions, or Tivo discussions or whatever.

>>I’m not here to make friends with the mods, or converse with the mods, or share strategies on how to return this country to its rightful place as a Constitutional republic with the mods.<<

But most of us do want to talk about strategies to return the country to its rightful place as a Constitutional republic.
