Zero's "distancing" foppishness will likely get good American servicemen and women killed in the future. Remember Clinton secretly negotiating withdrawal with the Somalis while US Army Special Forces were in shoot outs trying to capture terrorists, many killed unecessarily?Also Clinton refused tanks and armor to the servicemen on the ground, making the work deadly in retrieving downed helicopter crews there. Watch for the Zero to do a LOT worse as events unfold. And through it all Zero will say nothing, and stab his own military in the back if they fail while having one arm tied behind their backs, and claim all victories as his own on the backs of the military , for which he has little genuine respect or understanding.

The military for Obama is nothing more than a photo op in his continuing presidential campaign towards socialism of our nation.

Obama should have made a public statement,"You release captain Phillips , or you are dead men." But I suppose Zero has his head to far up the asses of his Muslim friends diplomatically , to take such a leadership position.That will also get Americans killed.

avy’s Rescue Mission ‘Textbook,’ But Piracy Still Looms, Gates Says

QUANTICO, Va., April 13, 2009 – The U.S. military’s rescue of a kidnapped American ship captain yesterday was “textbook,” but the issue of piracy is likely to worsen in the absence of a systemic solution, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today.

Off the Somali coast yesterday, U.S. special operations snipers on the USS Bainbridge shot and killed three pirates who had held hostage the captain of the Maersk-Alabama cargo ship on a lifeboat for five days. Military officials said Capt. Richard Phillips’ life was in imminent danger at the time of his rescue.

“It was textbook,” Gates said of the operation. “They were patient. They got the right people and the right equipment in place, and then did what they do.”

Gates, speaking at the Marine Corps War College here, said two groups of military operators were involved in the rescue — one based in the region and one based in the United States — with each requiring separate authority from President Barack Obama. “And the approval was given virtually immediately in both cases,” Gates said.

Despite the operational precision of the rescue, however, the question of how to deal with the broader issue of piracy still looms large, with 111 incidents reported last year on the east coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, according to the International Chamber of Commerce.
“Is there a way to deal with this in a systemic way that reduces the risk and brings the international community together in a productive way to deal with the problem?” Gates said. “I think we’re going to end up spending a fair amount of time on this in the administration, seeing if there is a way to try and mitigate this problem of piracy.”

Gates said the historical case of Southeast Asia’s solution to its piracy problem does not generally apply to the current Somali-based issue. In Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries, for instance, central governments played a role in stemming piracy, he said.

“[They] acquired some capabilities — and we helped them in some of those capabilities in terms of surveillance and patrolling — and because each of those countries has a functioning government, the piracy problem in Southeast Asia has been dramatically reduced,” he said.

“The problem is easier to deal with when the surrounding land — as in the case of Southeast Asia and the Straits of Malacca — is controlled by real governments that have real capabilities, which is not the case in Somalia,” he explained. “So it is a serious international problem, and it’s probably going to get worse.”

Gates, emphasizing the limitations of a purely military approach, said some have suggested bypassing the central government of Somalia and instead establishing relationships with officials of functioning local governments there.

“There is no purely military solution to it,” he said. “And as long as you’ve got this incredible number of poor people and the risks are relatively small, there’s really no way in my view to control it unless you get something on land that begins to change the equation for these kids.”

Gates noted the four pirates involved in kidnapping the Maersk-Alabama captain were 17 to 19 years old, and he cited the dangerous combination of untrained youth and arms.

“Untrained teenagers with heavy weapons,” he told the group of 30 students and faculty members at the Marine Corps War College. “Everybody in the room knows the consequences of that.”

Gates underscored that the piracy issue will likely be an important agenda item in coming weeks.

“All I can tell you is I am confident we will be spending a lot of time in the situation room over the next few weeks trying to figure out what in the world to do about this problem,” he said.

Pirates fired upon and attacked an offshore tug towing two barges. Further report are awaited.

11.04.2009: 0415 UTC: Posn 12:16.0N - 046:23E, Gulf of Aden.

Eight pirates armed with guns in a speed boat (blue colour, plastic hull, 12m length) attacked a bulk carrier underway. Vessel took evasive manoeuvres and contacted coalition warship. A coalition warship acknowledged and came to the location. The pirates approached at a distance of 100m and aborted the attack.

11.04.2009: 1240 UTC: Posn: 00:18.2N - 051:44.3E, About 285 nm east of Mogadishu, Somalia.

Eight pirates armed with guns and RPG in two skiffs, launched by a pirate mother vessel, attacked a container ship underway. Master increased speed to 22.8 knots and the skiffs followed at 23.5 knots. They approach very close and fired upon the ship. Master made evasive manoeuvers and prevented the boarding.

09.04.2009: 0210 UTC: Posn: 06:44.85S - 039:20.06E: Dar es Salaam anchorage, Tanzania.

While the crew kept a vigilant anti piracy watch onboard a container ship, robbers boarded her and succeeded in throwing one life raft into the sea. The crew raised alarm, mustered and reported to the authorities. Vessel did not attempt to recover the life raft due to the large number of robbers.

09.04.2009: 0020 UTC: Posn: 13:08N – 049:13E: Gulf of Aden.

Pirates in a skiff chased and fired upon a bulk carrier underway. The vessel commenced evasive manoeuvres and contacted the coalition naval forces for assistance. A military helicopter arrived and upon sighting the aircraft, the pirates aborted the attempt.

09.04.2009: 1807 LT: Posn: 14:08N – 051:28E, Gulf of Aden.

A general cargo ship underway sighted a suspicious mother vessel which later launched two skiffs. The boats chased the vessel and opened fire with guns and RPG. Master raised alarm, carried out evasive manoeuvers and succeeded in deterring the pirates.

08.04.2009: 0200 LT: Posn: 03:49.5N - 077:10.0W, Buenaventura anchorage, Colombia.

Seven robbers armed with long knives boarded a bulk carrier at anchor during heavy rain. Duty crew saw movements at bosun store and raised alarm. Crew mustered and rushed to the location. The robbers escaped with ship’s properties.

Pirates in skiffs, armed with automatic weapons chased and fired upon a container ship underway. Pirates eventually managed to board and hijacked her.

06.04.2009: 0300 LT:Posn: 01:51S – 055:25E, About 630 nm SE of Mogadishu, Somalia.

Armed pirates chased, boarded and hijacked a fishing trawler underway. Information available indicates that the fishing vessel was then used to try to hijack other fishing vessels in the vicinity. Pirates later directed the vessel towards the Somali coast.

06.04.2009: 0620 UTC: Posn 12:33N - 049:02E, Gulf of Aden.

A bulk carrier was attacked and hijacked by Somali pirates whilst underway. The ship is proceeding towards Somali coast.

06.04.2009: 1900 UTC: Posn: 15:13.47N – 067:15.1E Arabian sea.

A bulk carrier underway, detected on radar speed boats approaching from the stbd bow/port bow at a distance of 12nm. The speed boats increased speed and approached closer with a CPA of 0.01nm, master increased speed, all crew mustered, activated fire hoses, switched on all lights, sent distress signal, made evasive manoeuvres and succeeded in preventing the boarding.

04.04.2009: Posn: 09:36N - 058:35E: Somalia.

Pirates armed with guns hijacked a yacht with it’s five crew members. They sailed the yacht to an undisclosed location and demanded a ransom for the safe release of the crew and yacht. Fearing pirates may take the crew and hold them hostage on land the authorities launched a rescue operation in which four crew members including a child were rescued. However, the skipper was killed in the incident. Two pirates were killed and three others detained by the authorities.

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) - Somali pirates vowed to hunt down American ships and kill their sailors and French forces detained 11 other brigands in a high-seas raid as tensions ratcheted up Wednesday off Africa’s volatile eastern coast.

Pirates fired grenades and automatic weapons at an American freighter loaded with food aid but the ship escaped and was heading to Kenya under U.S. Navy guard.
