73RD MASTERS TOURNAMENT LIVE THREAD
http://www.masters.com ^ | 4/5/2009 | AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Posted on 04/05/2009 6:15:51 PM PDT by cleveland gop

Welcome to the (I guess) official thread to the 73rd playing of the Masters Golf Tournament from the Augusta National Golf Club. Now the game that we love and it's season is now officially, let's see who will be walking the 18th fairway ready to slip the coveted green jacket on late Sunday afternoon.

We all know who's in the field. While I'm posting this thread early, we can discuss and predict who's going to win.

You ain’t kidding. I want 300 baby!!!

I just went through today’s scores vis a vis tee times for tomorrow and as shocking as this sounds, Larry Mize is first out and could go low AGAIN????
Other players in the mix, like Baddeley, O’Hair and leader Campbell go off a little later in the morning.

In the middle wave towards late morning, Tiger, Kenny Perry, Cink and Clark should be playing as conditions get a little tougher.

Last groups out include Norman, Harrington, Furyk, Cabrera, Katayama, Weir and Phil. If the expected rain shows up, might this be the easiest time to go out, or if it stays dry, do scores go up??

Or like today, are there still 33’s to be had on the back 9 late in the day, like Tiger put up?

His son is young enough to be swayed by his dad’s “high-powered” life. No way to know if that is the case, but I’ve suspected. Tough for a single mom to compete with that.

What a perfect day for those who were there!!! I guess Condi was among the patrons today too.

I rather enjoyed the low scoring today. I like par as the measuring stick of excellence when it comes to majors, but considering bad weather and near impossible fast greens, having 38 players shoot under par today was a good thing, Shortening the course somewhat and having accessible pins to shoot at without having 12-13 speed greens worked.

That being said, playtime is over and you’ll see it in tomorrow’s scores. I can’t imagine more than 15 rounds being under par and with the cut being 44 and ties, figure on +1 or so to be the cut.

Leaders will be at -8(Furyk),
Norman stays at -2 and makes the cut, Padraig makes the biggest move shootimg 68 and gets to -7.
Tiger shoots 70 and goes into the weekend 4 back.
Who misses the cut, Phil, Retief, Ernie, Kim.

I hate having this discussion cause both viewpoints are absolutely correct.
Tradition is tradition having the past champions play as long as they wish, but if they’re going to shoot +20 for 2 rounds, wouldn’t it be better served to have younger playersin the field?

Worst round today was by Michael Campbell(+8), not exactly an old chap, while Player was at +2 with only a few holes left before finishing at +6. Ian Woosman shot +2 I think, not too bad.

I’m a night owl, especially since I work till 11 at night. Sometimes I stay up till 2 watching Sportscenter or TGC.

Fuzzy Zeoller, Craig Stadler, Ian Woosnam, Gary Player ... does the Masters really need the dinosaurs?

Yes - emphatically. In 1998 Jack Nicklaus was older than all the guys you mentioned (except for Player) are right now, yet he finished in 6th place, 4 shots behind the winner. He hadn't been competitive on tour for a while, so there's little doubt more than a few observers gave him "dinosaur" status at the time. Thankfully Augusta National didn't, or golf fans would've missed one special piece of golf history. ...even though he didn't win. Dinosaurs rule.

I think they should take a lesson from Arnie and Jack and bow out.

Player is bowing out -- it's now his time. And Arnie didn't bow out until he was in his late 70s. So why should Stadler, Zoeller, Crenshaw, Woosnam. etc. bow out at much younger ages? They've all earned their starting spots. Hootie Johnson and Billy Payne recognize that.

What? Should we change the name, too? Maybe “Showdown in Augusta”? Tradition is what the Masters is all about. I like having the “masters” in the field.

I think the old guys should play. Tradition is very important to the golf audience and the market as a whole.

Interesting results yesterday. A lot of unfamiliar names; I don’t pay as much attention as I used to!

but I think they should take a lesson from Arnie and Jack and bow out.

Well, this is Players' last Masters, so he's doing that. As far as the older guys go, it's not like they can't be competitive from time to time. Langer finished in the top ten a few years ago, and a few years before that, Jack had a chance to win before having a poor round on Sunday. And heck (not that he'll make the cut) but look at Larry Mize today.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the field to the Masters is numerically limited--if you make it, you're in (i.e., the old guys aren't taking spots from the young ones). DL III didn't qualify, so he's not in.

See, I hate thid discussion cause again, there are arguments that can be made on both sides with solid reasoning to back it up.

Me, if you held a gun to my head I would lean towards them still playing as long as they wish. With Arnie and Gary bowing out when they thought the time was right, hopefully others will follow and then things will be fine.

It seems Chad Campbell still has Augusta figured out, -9 through 4 holes.....

I’ll look forward to watching some of the final rounds this weekend. I wonder what their weather will be like. We’re expecting thunderstorms here in the Charlotte area.
