Newly-acquired Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is known for holding a grudge, and he still seems to be holding one against Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner stemming from an old recruiting dispute, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Citing people close to Cutler and a Denver Post column, some fences may need to be mended between Cutler and Turner now that theyre going to work together.
As a high school senior in southern Indiana, Cutler accepted a scholarship to Illinois where Turner was the head coach at the time. Cutler committed without visiting campus, though, and when he arrived for an official visit Turner reportedly pulled the offer.
When Jay went for his official visit, the coach told him they were rescinding the offer because they had some hot-shot quarterback from California, Heritage Hills athletic director Jay Burch told Denver Post columnist Woody Paige.
Illinois wound up signing Mike Dlugolecki, who wound up transferring to San Diego State. And Cutler had turned down offers from Purdue, Duke and Maryland to go to Illinois before winding up at Vanderbilt.
Its not right, Jake Cutler, Cutlers father, told ESPN.com. I still have a bitter taste in my mouth.
In the past, Turner has denied that Illinois rescinded the scholarship offer because Cutler was never made an offer.

Cutler had no say in the move to Chicago.
Looks like the wheels are starting to come off already...
(Go Broncos!)
QB Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt: Any interest Cutler received from Big Ten schools such as Purdue, Indiana and Illinois was as a safety. Finally, about a month before signing day, Vanderbilt offered him as a quarterback, and Cutler wound up being the 11th overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft. From here.
As a long suffering Bears fan, this is par for the course. Cutler is probably a big upgrade, but he’s got the Cade McNown syndrome (Hey! Look at me! I’m a big star!). The only difference with McNown is that Cutler can actually play the position.
Da Bears probably have the worst ownership (the dreaded McCaskey family) and front office (a loyal bu** kissing accountant is President - Ted Phillips) in the league. To supplement their weaknesses in evaluating and developing talent, they hired a bu**-kissing GM (Jerry Angelo) who may be one of the worst talent evaluators in the NFL.
I feel sorry for Lovie Smith. He coaxed a winning season in 2008 with a roster than was worse than some college teams, but the fans are starting to boo him.
Well if worse comes to worse Cutler can always demand a trade, put his house up for sale, and then claim he never wanted to be traded.
So Jay Cutler has a problem with Ron Turner???
And reportedly, Cutler and his agent Cook, poo-pood a possible 3 team deal involving the Redskins and Browns which would have in part sent Brady Quinn to the Broncos. Jay said he didn’t want to play for Eric Mangini because of a perceived strained relationship the former Jet’s head coach had with QB Brett Farve last season.
Hey Jay. A word of advice.....STFU AND PLAY FOOTBALL, OK??
I can understand not wanting to play for the worst team in the NFL in the Browns, but don’t make up something you have absolutely no knowledge of unless you happened to be in 2 places at once all of last season.
As I said before, every player in the NFL is likely scared out of their mind because they now know they are just a commodity, to be traded at the whim of the owner or coach. I blame both McDaniels (who seems like a smug, arrogant punk) and Bowen for all this.
That said, Cutler sure isn't helping himself. He really has turned into a crybaby. Sorta glad the Lions didn't really pursue him.
That should be hire a COACH who wants to replace your pro bowl QB...
ROTFLOL
I agree. This whole thing started with Denver wanting to get Matt Cassel. It was not Jay who created this mess.
I’m glad he’s with Chicago now—apparently he’s more wanted there. Jay’s a talented QB.
