What did "Slew" McCain sound like?

I'm sorry if this is off-topic, but I'm finishing a documentary on the sinking of the USS Princeton (CVL-23) during the battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944. John S. "Slew" McCain, John McCain's grandfather, was instrumental in the idea of Independence-class light carriers and I have a spoken voiceover from a report he wrote in 1939. However, I can't find any sound film of him (he died a few days after the signing of the Japanese surrender in September 1945.)

He was from Mississippi. Anybody know what he sounded like? I'm looking for a voiceover actor and the WWII forums we're helpful.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

Thanks!

OT, but I had a great uncle who died in that battle. His brother died on the USS Quincy at Guadalcanal. Never forget!!

I don’t know what he sounded like, but I like what I know of the man.

In the book “Halsey’s Typhoon”, the author described an exchange between Admiral McCain and his wife.

He was a hard drinker and smoker, and that had taken its toll on him. He apparently was prematurely aged and had ulcers.

His wife met a doctor who had a new treatment for ulcers, and when she suggested the Admiral go to see the doctor, he slammed his fist on a table in a rage and yelled “Not one penny for doctors! I am spending my inheritance on riotous living!”

Ya gotta love it!

Have you tried asking any of his grandchildren?

Call a voiceover agent and let them do your research.

I’ve repeatedly tried to contact McCain after he agreed to participate in the documentary in 2004. After repeated mailings of DVDs to revolving-door staff, I kept having to start from scratch, explaining the project and sending a DVD sample to four different media relations reps for his Senate Office. I gave up trying to get in touch with him.
