You said pitts are not human aggressive but I have been told by vets, dog trainers and others very familiar with dog behavior, that dogs often do not recognize a small child as human. They are on eye level with small children and see them either as prey or as competition.
It’s not just when someone is killed of seriously hurt though. The media does stories when pit bulls merely nip someone.
I don’t think I have ever seen a story where a Pit Bull just “nipped” someone. Gotta link?
That's a universal response when I tell the story. Hey, I just found an interesting compilation of dog injuries with various caveats here: http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf
"Of the breeds most often involved in incidents of sufficient severity to be listed, pit bull terriers are noteworthy for attacking adults almost as frequently as children. This is a very rare pattern: children are normally at greatest risk from dogbite because they play with dogs more often, have less experience in reading dog behavior, are more likely to engage in activity that alarms or stimulates a dog, and are less able to defend themselves when a dog becomes aggressive. Pit bulls seem to differ behaviorally from other dogs in having far less inhibition about attacking people who are larger than they are. They are also notorious for attacking seemingly without warning, a tendency exacerbated by the custom of docking pit bulls' tails so that warning signals are not easily recognized. Thus the adult victim of a pit bull attack may have had little or no opportunity to read the warning signals that would avert an attack from any other dog."
According to Chet his goal is...
"nor do I want to ban pit bulls. They can be kept in zoos next to other wild, vicious and undomesticated animals"
From my copy of The Complete Dog Book page 264:
“Anyone who has read about the sport of ‘bull baiting’ must have been conscious of its extreme cruelty. From this we can gather that the original Bulldog had to be a very ferocious animal. Beauty and symmetry of form were in no way desirable, the appearance of the dog counting for nothing. The extraordinary courage possessed by these dogs is hardly believable. Bred from a long line of fighting ancestors, they grew to be so savage, so courageous as to be almost insensitive to pain. Such was the Bulldog of British sporting days.”
See my post # 35 above and follow the link to my description of when I saw a pit bull attack a horse.
Around the world, societies that practice animal husbandry are desensitized societies. The abuse of animals inevitably spills over into the treatment of women and children. Polygamy, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, and slavery persist in in many of the very regions that Heifer Project International serves, for example, as extensions of common agricultural practice to those of our own species who are least able to protect themselves. He is a discredited wacko and anything he says should be taken with a grain of salt.

Please tell me someone shot that Pit that attacked the horse!
I don't have a "cause". I found several lists and the one I posted was referenced from another reputable site. It looked like it had the most complete and accurate data - such as this reference "German shepherd mix: One fatality victim, age 83, was apparently killed by an overly rowdy greeting. The victim was knocked down and suffered multiple broken bones, but was not bitten."
If you've got something better - why don't you share it with us instead of levying an ad hominem attack on me...?
Way too many people on the beach. The owners of the Pit chased the duo off into the sunset on motocross bikes. I have no idea how it turned out after I lost sight of them - but I didn't hear gun fire. I checked out the man who broke his arm but EMTs showed up quickly, so I went back to my business.
Geez...touchy or what?! No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.
If you think that is what my post was,
instead of the friendly advice it was intended to be,
it is perhaps better that I avoid responding to you.
'Cause'= point, reason, goal of your post(s)
This part of your Clifton quote is particularly off the wall....
"They are also notorious for attacking seemingly without warning,
a tendency exacerbated by the custom of docking pit bulls' tails so that warning signals are not easily recognized"
We have discussed this statement before on FR
and no one had ever heard of
nor seen anything to remotely justify it.
There is no "custom" of docking tails.
The only "pit bull" I've seen either personally, on the web or in news reports with a docked tail, is my own...
And ,,,Another one...
TANKS,Chet...
Hopefully her Dad has good medical insurance,,,

During a wilderness canoe trip we met a group from Outward Bound.
All the kids got a big kick out of his Outward Hound life jacket.
That’s fantastic. Thanks!
CDC is a good place to start
