Sean Penn is going slapstick. MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers' big-screen update of The Three Stooges.
Jim Carrey was in negotiations for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford.
The studio first featured the Stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933. Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. He said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.

Yes - another decent example is Steve Martin trying to remake Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. I haven’t yet seen the Steve Martin version (seen the Youtube clip of him taking English pronunciation lessons of “I vant tew order an umbrugguh”) - as great as Steve Martin is - he’s just not Peter Sellers.
I have a hard time picturing them doing the “He-Man Woman Haters Club” nowadays. It would have to be the “Beloved equality club of matriarchal utopian community activists including the trans-gendered”.
They should get Billy West to voice Penn’s parts, he does the best Larry.

I liked the original Stooges, but I can’t stand Jim Carrey. Spectacularly unfunny and painful to watch. I’ll give this one a big pass.
Why are there so many remakes....can’t they invent something new in Hollywood? The Three Stooges will always be of their time, and that is the beauty of it! The characters cannot be duplicated or improved upon!
” I detest Penns politics (and that of his father BTW) but I respect his acting.”
Agree. Watched Milk last night with the intent to see why he won the Oscar.
Have to say he certainly deserved the nomination, although I would have preferred another winner.
“I wont fund a naked Communist.”
I don’t have a problem with your philosophy on this, and I’m not thrilled about the idea of funding Sean Penn by seeing his movies, but there are so many far-left-wing actors that I wouldn’t be able to watch much of anything if I decided to boycott everything they did.
This film has two Che loving stooges.
I thought the He-Man Woman Haters Club was Spanky & Alfalfa.
“...I cant stand Jim Carrey. Spectacularly unfunny and painful to watch. Ill give this one a big pass.”
With Jim Carrey, for me it’s hit and miss, mostly miss. I thought he was unfunny in The Grinch, or as E. Nigma/Riddler in whichever Batman movie he was in, but I thought he was very funny in Liar Liar.
“This film has two Che loving stooges.”
Didn’t know that, is the other commie-lover Jim Carrey or Del Toro?
I think you might be right about the He-Man part, but the Stooges had a short about a woman hating club, I think maybe more than once. Friggen pure genius if you ask me.

Che sucks. Communism kills.
“Del Toro was in a 2 movie deal portraying Che”
Oh yeah, The Motorcycle Diaries, I never saw it, but did see some commercials for it. I think most people have only a casual knowledge, at best, of Che Guevara, and may not even realize that he was a communist. My wife saw the commercial for Mortorcycle Diaries and said “that’s looks really good, I want to see that.” She had no clue that Che was a communist. It’s a shame to see Che romanticized as some kind of righteous revolutionary, when (I think) he was actually guilty of war crime atrocities involving the killing of political prisoners.

That’s ONE reason I won’t bother to watch this movie.
release all of the shorts
