Sean Penn is going slapstick. MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers' big-screen update of The Three Stooges.
Jim Carrey was in negotiations for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford.
The studio first featured the Stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933. Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. He said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.

Shemp Howard had the most viable film career outside of the Three Stooges. Moe appeared in a couple of films.
They almost reunited for Blazing Stewardesses but the Ritz Brothers ended up with the part (I think because of Larry’s failing health).

Sean Penn couldn’t carry Larry Fine’s jockstrap.

Hollywierd has to resort to remakes because they don’t have an original idea or writer left on the whole Left Coast.
This one will flop like a rotting dead carp in the hot sun, and smell even worse.

Not even close.
Carrey is no Curly.

They should've gone with Steve Paymer. He looks AND sounds like Larry Fine and does deadpan comedy roles.

And I am unaware if he is a stinking Commie who pals around with dictators while insulting America.

Larry was my favorite of the 3 stooges, I imagine Sean Penn could play Larry very well. I don’t like Penn’s politics, but I don’t let that stop me from enjoying his performances.

Yeah I do remember that about Shemp. And that’s more or less my point. Shemp had too hard of an act to follow when Curly had to retire. Objectively Shemp was great - it’s just that he wasn’t Curly.
To: laotzu
Jim Carrey as Curley? Well sure! I mean, I can hardly tell them apart. And how about Rosie O’Donnell as Moe.

This talk reminds me of when they were casting the Jerry Lee Lewis movie and some of the talk had gotten around to casting Mickey Rourke in the role.
Someone in the chain (Rourke’s agency?) got it in their head the casting was to play Jerry Lewis, the comedian, not The Killer.

This will probably be about as successful as the remake of The Honeymooners, which budgeted $25 Million for production costs and earned about half that at $13 million.

Time-Lies-Warner is raping my childhood. They officially license thug life t-shirts of Bugs Bunny as cokehead Scarface and other gangsters/gangstas.
There are unofficial shirts too but WB did go and co-opt some of those artists/concepts to meet the market demand.

If Hollywood had not rewritten copyright law to perpetually extend copyrights (nothing goes into the public domain anymore, Big Media owns Congress), they would've gone bankrupt long ago from bad decisions on current product.
They have billions of dollars worth of old favorites that keep them solvent.

well once you have the initial characters in your head everyone else comes up short.
The problem with remakes is that the newer characters try too hard to 'be' the classic characters. And that is impossible.

Jim Carrey is the best physical/slapstick comedian since Jerry Lewis.

True. The length of copyright will always be Mickey Mouse plus five years.

America can no longer understand or relate to the old morality or ideals. This kind of humor comes from a time when America was still innocent and naive. The things they viewed as hilarious then are completely misunderstood today.
Slapstick comedy like this will fall flat on it's face, and Penn is completely unfunny. Too many people see him as himself.
Jim Carey as Curly, will work about as well has having Alec Baldwin play Harpo Marx.
