NEW BEDFORD The artist responsible for the painting of Jesus at Lund's Corner has come forward, albeit reluctantly.
Mark Carvalho, 31, a New Bedford man and professional artist, told the Standard-Times on Saturday that he painted the image and affixed it to the outer wall of Premier Video on Ashley Blvd. to brighten up the wall and send a message.
"The wall that's there is kind of a blank, dismal wall," he said. "It was void of any emotion or anything."
Now, the image of Jesus apparently shielding his eyes from the world has caused emotion to well up in people, which was Carvalho's goal for the work.
"I've heard that people were crying in front of it and that they were praying in front of it. It's an amazing feeling."

It’s funny - I guess the people who know what Jesus looked like are the same ones that know what Mary looked like.

What's a toast burning of the late Jim Croce got to do with this thread? :-)

How long until the ACLU comes with a hose to save the day? Clearly Mark wants to force Americans to live under a Christian theocracy. /S

Regardless of your religious convictions, it’s not his wall. That the message is a good one doesn’t change that.

If he’d painted a Mayan goddess it would have been okay with the ACLU and other libs.

Carvalho is a Portuguese name, and New Bedford is home to devoutly religious Portuguese Catholics. The simple painting is actually quite moving.
