INSANITY! All the Storm Drain Grates on My Street Have been Replaced
March 27, 2009 | ML/NJ

Posted on 03/27/2009 2:38:05 PM PDT by ml/nj

All of the Storm Drain Grates on my street have been replaced. There was nothing wrong with the old ones that I could tell. But they didn't have the admonition, "DUMP NO WASTE / DRIANS TO WATERWAY" in raised letters in the iron or whatever it is they use to make these things.

I discovered this only today, because today was the first day this year that the weather permitted an outside cigar walk. They repaved the street sometime and it was probably during this project that the new grates were installed. Pictures below:

(The new one is the one on the left if it isn't obvious.)

I wonder where the town fathers thought we thought the water drained to! Politicians are all so brilliant and we are all so stupid.

It should be clear why they did this. The other ones were dirty?

Your tax dollars hard at work, actually the new one will keep out more debris, keeping the storm sewer running freely so no flooding. The down side is that the junk collects at the opening and there will not be a street sweeper around as he just got laid off and after a big storm the water backs up onto the street and into your basement.

The old ones could be killer to road bike tires. The new ones... I don’t know.

It looks like the new sewer caps are more inefficient for water flow, the back end looks much narrower, and the horizontal cover has sixty or so smaller drains, which might make them easier to clog than the thirty longitudinal and longer slats. But I’m not a brilliant engineer who can chalk up the project to shovel ready status.

Look at the bright side, they didn’t place dump no waste in 10 different languages. /sarcasm

I know, what bright side? Everywhere people look doom and gloom. Yesterday Mark Levin said couldn’t obama gives us one day of peace?!

Hey Admin!

I would have posted this to the despised "Chat" myself except when I started to do so there was no "Government" category to select. What should I have chosen, "Hobbies"?

More bicycle friendly, and less prone to flushing leaves and trash into the sewer. Why don’t you ask your town why they replaced them? That seems to be a common sense thing to do.

In the SF bay area they have an easier solution than a new grate. A stencil that says “Drains to Bay”.

Why the lettering?

Well, one weekend about 18 months ago a resident of the small community I was chief in discovered his basement had about 3 feet of sewage in it. He called City Hall but this was a Saturday. he called the police department but unless an officer in the building and off patrol, there is no one in it on weekends. He didn't think to call Central Dispatch for the officer.

So he took it upon himself to pump out his basement full of sewage and dump it into the storm sewer system. Needless to say that on Monday our DPW crews were busy cleaning up a large portion of storm sewer before it migrated it's way into the county drain system. I estimate that it cost the City about $5000.00 in man-hours and equipment to fix this mistake.

I was so astounded that I wanted to open an investigation and possibly charge the moron or at least go for cost recovery but I was denied. You see, even members of the Council did not know that storm and sanitary sewers are separate lines.

Apparently the guys sewer had been stopped up in his house for months and he didn't discover the mess until his furnace quit working. I guess the smell wasn't a clue. The error was on his end and not the city's.

So, now the City will place similarly changed sewer grates as they do routine repairs.

Is there a place of manufacture stamped on the new ones? I’m thinking they might not be domestic. But think of all the union labor that went into that replacement. How stimulating!

Also, how did you get the photo of the old one if you just notice the change today?
