I remember his brother, “Chicken” Teriyaki - he flew 21 kamikaze missions.

Traumatised, he then sought the refuge of his hometown - Nagasaki.

Oh man, poor fellow.

Somebody was out to get this poor guy but his gods must have thought him worth saving. I'm amazed he lasted this long.

It is unclear why it has taken so long for Yamaguchi to be recognised.

Might it have something to do with undercutting MAD and the publics irrational fear of radiation?

No one I met at this time — doctors, nurses, practicantes, or fellow-patients — failed to assure me that a man who is hit through the neck and survives it is the luckiest creature alive. I could not help thinking that it would be even luckier not to be hit at all.

Which just goes to show you. When it’s your time to go it’s your time to go, and not a MINUTE sooner.

I remember reading a story in Time magazine over 30 years ago about a man who survived both blasts. Then later I read it was not true.

Sounds like there is at least one confirmed case, though.

Wonder how he got between the two cities? It’s not a short distance. The two cities are on two different islands.

Yamaguchi is one of about 260,000 people who survived the attacks. Bombing survivors have developed various illnesses from radiation exposure, including cancer and liver illnesses.

OK, granted that many died from radiation effects (either direct burns or internal radiation illness) after the bombs were dropped. But 64 years later, and a guy who is 93 years old now and has out lived most of his contempoaries who were never exposed says that the exposure he got back then sure is not going to be the cause of his ultimate demise.

God bless the guy anyway.

Kind of like that woman in Lebanon who with the the help of Reuters photo propagandists had at least three of her homes destroyed by the Israelis in a single day.
