ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted five times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano's first emissions in nearly 20 years. Residents in the state's largest city were spared from falling ash, though fine gray dust was falling Monday morning on small communities north of Anchorage. "It's coming down," Rita Jackson, 56, said early Monday morning at a 24-hour grocery store in Willow, about 50 miles north of Anchorage. She slid her fingers across the hood of her car, through a dusting of ash.

Half of Alaska's population lives downwind from the volcano in the Cook Inlet area; the distal effects of future tephra eruptions of Redoubt could reach this population readily.

That looks totally nuclear!

One ash-kicking volcano, I’d say.

An Indian a few miles away was sending up smoke signals; when he saw the enormous volcanic cloud, he could only marvel,

“Gee, I wish I’D said that!”

;^)

Poor Sarah Palin’s screwed now. The entire state's allotment of carbon credits used up in one big poof!

Can this be a scary omen of what is to come? It looks like the mushroom cloud from the Bikini Atoll H-bomb test of 1954.

Weird. On the far right of the cloud you can see one really ugly frowning facemask that looks like a pissed off native american warmask with a beard.

Just a note to all:

There are zero, zip, NADA photographs or video of the eruption today. It was at night in bad weather.

The photos on this thread are from the Redoubt Eruption 19 years ago.
