I wear one too and I raced in college and am now an expert guide when I get the chance. Mandatory? No, but having witnessed a person die when they hit a tree with the back of their head, I have to conclude that anyone who alpine skis without a helmet is a reckless moron.

It probably makes sense for you.
I might add that snowboarders should probably wear helmets. The very nature of that sport practically guarantees you're going to hit your backside from time to time, and so whip your neck or strike the back of the head. I wouldn't make it mandatory, however.

“...Reckless moron”, eh?
Not even a CHANCE that someone might find a helmet restrictive and uncomfortable and CHOOSES not to wear one?

I have to conclude that anyone who alpine skis without a helmet is a reckless moron. Over the last 60 years or so, how many Alpine skiers have not died due to head injuries?
Seems to me that the numbers would indicate that it is a relatively safe sport that has been enjoyed by millions of "reckless morons".

I wear one because I suck at skiing.
