"Various Democrats argued against the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Acts"

Republicans voted over 80% for passage. Democrats only voted 50% for passage.

Interesting essay.

BTW I know your "open letter" really isn't to the nitwit knee-jerk leftist Garofalo. Her ilk are far beyond appeals to the intellect.

Now is the time for conservatives to try to educate the middle, as they are only now becoming aware of the grievous mistake they made last November.

Nothing like filling a tea cup with a water cannon. Ms. Garofolo likely hasn’t the mental capacity to take in any more than her name, let alone your argument.

Garofalo is too ignorant to read this, much less understand it.

If she had an honest bone in her body, she’d admit her ignorance and humbly request to be taught the truth.

We stopped watching 24 this year as we couldn’t stand her. She is a horrendous actress on that show. Why they even hired that yahoo is beyond me. Talk about being offensive to your audience. There was much better talent elsewhere.

Excellent.

Good to remind people that it was Dem hero Woodrow Wilson that brought Jim Crow into federal law (and Republicans who threw it out). FDR opposed anti-lynching legislation.

When you look at the old photos of lynch mobs, and old photos showing goons with firehoses attacking black citizens, not one of the attackers is a Republican. They are all Democrats, every last one of them.

The Republican Party is right where it has always been, it has changed very little over the years; it is the party of color-blind citizenship. And most Repubs during the bad old days were proud of that heritage, and still are.

It is the Democratic Party that has, thank God, changed its position on open race bigotry, though they remain the party of the race obsessed. If you believe that race trumps all, if you believe its impossible to ignore race, if it is your defining issue, then its a nearly air-tight certainty that you are a Democrat. If you do not define yourself by your race, if race politics don’t interest you, if you believe in color-blind citizenship, if you see yourself as an American first and your particular ethnicity secondarily or even not at all, you are probably a Republican or you are headed our way.

Isn’t the 5th sentence regarding the Jesse, Jr. quote supposed to read “Republican slave masters” and not “Democrat slave masters”?

Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Illinois said: "before the Civil War, the Democratic slave masters used to hold anti-black conventions." What? ...We thought the Republican Party was the Party of Slavery, didn't we? There are thousands of black Americans who actually believe that. (Even a black woman in New York City believes that Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat.) The Republican Party was formed in the 1850's for the purpose of abolishing slavery and polygamy. The Republican National Committee website says: "The Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge."
