Apple Inc.'s Safari is the juiciest target in the upcoming PWN2OWN hacking contest, last year's winner predicted today.
"It's an easy target," said Charlie Miller, the vulnerability researcher who last year walked off with a $10,000 cash prize for breaking into an Apple laptop just a few minutes into the contest. PWNOWN is slated for its third appearance at the CanSecWest security conference later this month in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"It might be because I'm biased about the things I'm good at, but it's the easiest browser [to hack]," Miller said.
PWN2OWN's sponsor, 3Com Inc.'s TippingPoint unit, will pay $5,000 for each new bug successfully exploited in Safari, Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox or Google Inc.'s Chrome. IE8, Firefox and Chrome will be running on a Sony notebook powered by Windows 7, Microsoft's still-under-construction operating system, while Safari and Firefox will be available on a MacBook.
"Apple's products are really friendly to users, and Safari is designed to handle anything, including all kinds of file formats," said Miller. "With a lot of functionality comes the increased chance of bugs. The more complex software is, the less secure it is."

Like I said (to someone else maybe you”) pick up the hardware of your choice. Then for $350 an hour I will slap it all together.
You were the one bragging that you could put a great computer system together for $400. If your time is worth $350 an hour I call BS on your $400 system.
Stallman isn’t asking for your money, just your support in putting American businesses out of business, which you are faithfully assisting with.
I used to do Field service tech support for Unisys and replaced MANY LCD screens.
One person could be fine for the life of the laptop. Other unlucky people would have their screens crap out multiple times.
Seemed like a luck of the draw.
They got theirs replaced for free.
ALWAYS get the extended warranty when buying an LCD panel, especialy laptops and tv’s.
Unless you actually know how easy it is to replace and where to find them the $$$$ might make it not even worth it.
Of course none of them were the mighty Apple so i have no idea what their fail rate is.
It seemed Samsung was the Market leader in most of the screens i had to change.
When Unisys got that Dell contract it was the beginning of the end.
Man did that suck.
I think they are trading now at about 33 cents a share.
Down from about 50 bucks when i was there.
until recently i had no idea intel still made Xeon.

Using that Passmark CPU test just now i was able to score a
3948 with my Q6600 2.4 OC’d to 3.4.
Seems like a great score till you read those Xeon numbers.

FRiend, I think you assumed I was participating in the "Apple vs PC wars". Not so. I was simply responding that my cost to build came in higher than Jsteff's.
In response to your comment, I would have to be able to get those components in the retail market to assess their cost to build. Since I can't, the question is really moot.
However, other than the "completely silent" (really?, completely? not even a whisper?), I could live with the other components not being in an integrated package, if I chose to assemble such a group of hardware.
An integrated package such as you describe is certainly good for eliminating desk clutter, but for me, the down side would be disassembly and repairability, should a failure occur.
Also, I will be upgrading my monitor screen and will go with a 22" or 24" replacement. Upgrading such an integrated package has more challenges and in some cases is a lock-in to older technology.
BTW, I have considered Apple hardware, but if I went that route, I would not get the integrated product, and would go with their separate mainbox, monitor, etc. product.

Today they F’ed up the new Samsung color laser printer i got them for Christmas for only 80 bucks, newegg refurbished.
Turns out they went through a years supply of toner in 2 months. kids were printing everything full color, Stacks of Hannah Montanna and Hotwheels color prints everywhere.

Why don't you have JSteff make you a half a dozen of his $400 dollar computers, give each person their own computer and tell them that they are responsible to learn how to deal with it and take care of it.

I’m just pointing out the danger of the guy, which you seemingly are aware of considering your sensitivity of being associated with him, but there’s no doubt you’re carrying out the exact mission his disciples do of attacking the capitalist companies he’s opposed to so that his freeware product will thrive instead. You need to either stop trying to make his communist plans come true by creating all these threads attacking these businesses, or give us some better reasons on why you’re doing so. Claiming it’s because Apple and Microsoft are both owned by leftists is bogus, not only because they’re actually owned by shareholders, but you’re following the exact guidelines of the biggest anti-capitalist commie in tech yourself, who wants all of our businesses destroyed and replaced with a software tax on everyone instead.

This thread did not start out in any form as a stallman thread, and look where you’ve driven it.
I’m never going to let up on Stallman and his FSF/GNU organizations, he’s a green party anti-capitalist leftist that more people need to know about, so they can be on the lookout for those like him that would like to see the existing US software companies put out of business so we can all be taxed for his “free software” instead. Don’t you think other’s should know?
