While bread gets cracker-ified during Passover, chosen bottles of soda get stripped of their high-fructose corn syrup and are sweetened instead with the real deal. No need to hunt for imported Mexican colas or hitch a ride south of the border for the cane sugar cola that tastes so great.
That's right: Passover Coke is here! (Or Passover Pepsi, if you're on that side of the Cola War.)
Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi make a real-sugar version around this time of year, and you can find it by looking for yellow caps on Coke bottles or white caps on Pepsi. But to be sure you really have a sweet, sweet sugariffic cola in your hands, check the cap for a "P" next to whatever kosher symbol appears (see photo).
Because corn syrup is made from one of the five no-no grains, it's considered chametz and is therefore forbidden during Passover (along with anything made from wheat, oats, barley, rye, and spelt). The grain constraints are, of course, a nod to the Jewish exodus from Egypt; the Israelites fled in such a hurry that they didn't have time for baked bread to rise.
Enjoying Kosher-for-Passover pop of course doesn't require being Jewish. It requires a love for more refreshing, crisper cola. The eight-day pop-slurping fester, commemoration of the liberated Israelite slavesstarts tomorrow at sundown, but the kosher sugar-high is already available in grocery stores.
According to a forum on the beverage industry site BevNet, it's been spotted at Gelson's and Ralph's in California, Kroger in the Midwest, and a variety of Eastern European markets in Chicago and Brooklyn neighborhoods.
Costco Is Selling Mexican Coke
Thanks for the reminder. Hopefully can be found somewhere in my area.
Thanks, interesting indeed.
...and it’s all due to out import restrictions on sugar.
FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes ping list.
Artificial sweetener tied to weight gain
I don't use artificial sweeteners. If I drink soda, I prefer to cut it with roughly an equal volume of seltzer or club soda. I don't have diabetes. Thank You, God.
I shall go on a hunt tommorow and stock up big time.
So, it is usually only found in more urban areas that have significant Jewish populations? This article is a year old so when do we begin looking? A week before, a month?
It seems with all the permutations of various colas the companies would market a Coke-S or Pepsi-S and make it available all year around.
Thanks for the update & link!

I have read somewhere that Aspartame is difficult for the body to break down, and converts to formaldehyde on its way out of the system. If true, this would explain why Aspartame makes me feel ill. Formaldehyde isn’t one bit good for you.
I have read elsewhere that those wee white pills that alcoholics take to make themselves ill if they consume alcohol work because they convert alcohol into an -aldehyde, which makes them feel violently ill, too.
That’s what Aspartame does to me: I get a wicked headache right between the eyes followed by a crook-in-the-guts, and after 30 minutes max I’m Captain Cook for 5 to 6 hours at least. Crook as a chook, and I’ve got my head in the toilet and the room is spinning. Not funny! Not funny at all!
(lucky thing they don’t make beer out of Aspartame else I’d have a real ethical dilemma!)
Thank GOD! I know Coke used to be so much better, but that sickenly sweet after taste in your throat is disgusting.
Coke used to be “refreshing” as they advertised, now I neeed something to wash it down with.
I drink Cheerwine here in 12 oz bottles which uses pure cane sugar rather than HFCS.
Also, the Sam’s Club here sells Coke from south of the border in 12oz bottles using sugar. I do think it tastes better and while still not a health food, the sugar digests easier than the processed corn syrup.
Look at the carbon isotope ratios in the sugar...
Re: Aspartame, if an ingredient requires a warning label, it’s probably wise to avoid it.
Me it just makes hellishly depressed. Like I need help being more depressed.
GEORGE: I don’t even drink wine. I drink Pepsi.
ELAINE: You can’t bring Pepsi.
GEORGE: Why not?
ELAINE: Because we’re adults?
GEORGE: You telling me that wine is better than Pepsi? Huh, no way wine is better than Pepsi.
...
GEORGE: Why don’t you just get some Ring Dings at the liquor store?
ELAINE: Ring Dings?
GEORGE: Hey, Ring Dings are better than anything you’ll ever get at a bakery.
KRAMER: I like Ring Dings.
ELAINE: George, we can’t show up at someone’s house with Ring Dings and Pepsi.
KRAMER: HEY YOUR LIGHTS ARE ON!
GEORGE: It’s a funeral procession. . . . And I got news for you. I show up with Ring Dings and Pepsi, I become the biggest hit at the party. People be coming up to me, “just between you and me I’m really excited about the Ring Dings and the Pepsi. Europeans with the Beaujolais and Chardonnay . . .

Unless, of course, you have some other kind of allergy or intolerance.
The components of aspartame are phenylalanine, one of the most common amino acids found in just about every protein; aspartic acid, another amino acid common in fruits and vegetables, and methanol, which is found in any fermented beverage. Your body easily breaks these chemicals down. If you eat a steak with baked potato and a glass of red wine you'll be ingesting a heck of a lot more of these three chemicals than you will from a can of diet coke.
...and converts to formaldehyde on its way out of the system. If true, this would explain why Aspartame makes me feel ill. Formaldehyde isnt one bit good for you.
It's true that your body converts methanol into formaldehyde but the amount is so minute that your liver easily clears it. As a matter of fact, you get several times more methanol from a glass of apple juice, or from a glass of red wine, than you do from a diet coke. Of course, you consume arsenic when you eat a baked potato and limonene (paint stripper) when you drink a glass of orange juice. Eat lima beans and you'll be giving your body a dose of cyanide. The list goes on and on but the old adage about the dosage making the poison still applies.
You have nothing to fear from these chemicals but fear itself.
Hope I can find some ...
It cost more to produce - sugar price protection and all...
Finally found some Sugar Coke!!!
I have a friend from Newton MA that found some for me at the Stop and Shop.
She came By with 3 Two litre bottles with the yellow caps.
Oh Yea!!!
I’m drinking a tall 16oz glass with crushed ice and a straw.
It’s very good.
It’s Thicker. reminds me of the old soda fountain and glass bottle cokes.
Makes a lot of foam while pouring, even when being careful.
Has a real nice aftertaste.
I told her to get me as many more as she can.
It’s cheap enough.
Thanks for the heads up!!
Maybe so but ... like DtHunter, I found that I would get very ill if I drank diet Coke or artificial sweeteners. Much better to stay away from them.
I like the sound of this product and I would buy it except that I don't drink soft drinks. Cane sugar is a most superior sweetener, and corn syrup is implicated in making people obese.
