Calling all Boxer owners!
Right here at the desk | 03/04/2009 | Tennessee_Bob

Posted on 03/04/2009 3:36:02 AM PST by Tennessee_Bob

Good morning! My family (myself, my wife, and our 16 year old and 14 month old) have been presented with the opportunity to adopt a Boxer. His owner is being relocated and cannot take him with her. He's three years old, gets along with small animals, which is good seeing as we have two cats, and a Sheltie. I've read about them quite a bit, and have been around a couple of them. My wife has owned one in the past. I'm impressed with them, but I'd like to get some owner's opinions and suggestions.

From what I can gather from what the owner has told me, he's well socialized and loves kids. The things I've read indicate that they're great with kids, and are good family dogs. What have your experiences been? As a three year old, do you think he can adapt to another family?

Thanks in advance!

Boxers are very attuned to a person’s feelings

My friends had a boxer that lived to be almost 15. During a low period after I lost my husband I went to visit them. The dog would not leave my side the whole time I was there. She would lay her head on my lap, sigh and just watch me. A little lick every so often. She even wanted sleep in the same room I did.

I cried when they had to put her down.

I don’t know anything about Boxers (I wouldn’t get one named Barbara - I know that), but don’t worry about a 3-year-old adapting.

We got Bubba from rescue at two years old and he adapted in 24 hours. Or maybe it was one hour.

I have never owned a boxer but I know people who have them and children and it is a great combination......they are sweet dogs but remember a good dog is a tired dog and exercise is always important......

You will not regret the boxer addition to the family.....

Nutro’s “Ultra” line of food has extra ingredients that are supposed to help prevent cancer in dogs. I adopted my little terrier from the pound back in November. She has a small fatty tumor on her head. I switched her to Ultra (from Eukanuba) the first dish she picked out all the Ultra and would not eat the Eukanuba. It was only a month ago that I found out about the anti cancer stuff in Ultra.

Bruce is the brindle. He just turned three years old. We're going over Saturday evening to meet with him and his owner, and if everything goes well, he'll be coming home with us that evening. According to his owner and our mutual friend, Bruce is well socialized, and loves kids, babies on up. He gets along with small dogs, cats, you name it.

I appreciate all the comments, both positive and negative. I'm looking forward to this great addition to our family. We don't have a huge yard, but the better part of the half acre we're on is fenced in, and it's going to be a blast running around in it with him, as well as getting him out for walks. I work right across the street from where we live, and there's a great walking path around the lake between the buildings, so it's going to be fun. I'll post more pictures when we bring him home. And thanks again :)

Yikes.

Got divorced in 2000. Got remarried in 2007. Primary discussion before getting married was that we weren't going to have kids because I already had one (14 at the time).

Do you know the best way to make God laugh? Tell Him your plans. He decided we needed another girl in our family - and so we have Kayleigh. I'm 45, my wife is 36, and it's absolutely awesome. Funniest part is when I'm out by myself with her and some woman will come up and go, "Oh, are you out with grandpa?" And I get to smile and say "Nope, I'm her dad." I don't know why they get all embarrassed. ;)

There is nothing more handsome than a shiny brindle with a white collar. (I say this as the owner of a dog of a different breed with precisely the same coloring as Bruce.) You are fortunate to be the new dogdad of such a sweet and beautiful boy.

Bruce is beautiful! My boxers were the fawn color. I have also seen mahogany, almost black looking.

I just love that face! Good luck to you and your family.

What a sweet picture and I love brindle's....

You guys sound like the perfect match for Bruce (love the name)......the nice thing about adopting the older dog, you don't have to deal with all the puppy stuff....chewing everything in sight and leaving” gifts” on the floor....

looking forward to pictures....

Aww, he’s gorgeous! And what a sweet picture of the 3 dogs snuggled together on one sleeping pad!

I’ glad you’re giving the guy a new, loving home. I don’t know if my Heinz-57 of unknown parentage is boxer or pit, but she’s the most *thinking* and *sensitive* animal I’ve ever owned. So human, it’s scary! But with all I’m reading here, this is the first time I’ve wanted her to be a pit instead of boxer. Never heard about the susceptibility to tumors til now.

My dogs, even the lab, are allowed to browse-feed. That’s best for deep-chested dogs to help avoid torsion after a heavy meal.

I had a boxer, an Akita and a snauzer (not sure of the spelling)all living here at the same time. I mentioned it before but will do it again. The difference between the three is this. If I had to do plumbing the Akita and the Snauzer would watch...the boxer would hand me the tools. Some people say a boxer is stupid. Actually they are very smart. I would throw a ball and tell it to go fetch the ball. He would look at me like I was out of my mind. Eventually I would have to fetch the ball...Mission accomplished!
They look mean and they sound mean but they are the biggest babies in the dog world. They sure can scare a person who doesn’t know much about them which is great for protecting your home and family.
He brought us much happiness but died around 10 years old. I might consider a bulldog if I couldn’t have a boxer but boxer would be my first choice. My son recently purchased a boxer and I use every excuse to babysit it until we get one. He looks like the one this person posted under boxers (images)

I’m owned by two fabulous Boxers, and I can’t go on enough about what a joy they are to have in my life. They have been fantastic dogs. One is 7 and one will be 6 in April. I have a female brindle and my male is fawn. I wish you luck and joy with your new friend. I can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said, so I will just agree that Boxers are fantastic family dogs. They cannot be left outside in extreme heat or cold, though. Being brachycephalic makes it very dangerous for them.

That brindle boxer is a handsome dog. Good luck with him. I see that he has natural ears. I think that’s best.

The only experience I have with a boxer is that my neighbors had one when I was in HS. I was terrified of it, but that is another story. They had a terrible time with the ears after they had them trimmed. One of them drooped and ruined that dog’s opportunity to be the show dog they wanted.

They weren’t very nice neighbors. I felt sorry for the dog. I think they finally sold him because of the ears.

I like dogs in their natural state. My son just purchased a Brittany from neighbors who didn’t dock the tail at the right time. Maggie is the cutest Brittany you ever say. Her tail curves up and is adorable. She has a mask over one eye and freckles on her nose. I’m glad they didn’t cut her tail off!
