Two Newark men arrested in fatal shooting of Verona gas station attendant

David Fate was dozing on a rust-colored couch inside a trailer in rural South Carolina when a loud voice pierced his slumber yesterday morning. "Wake up!"

The 24-year-old Fate opened his eyes to see about a half-dozen law enforcement officers filling the cramped space before him. They were all pointing guns at him.

"When he woke up, he looked at me like I was Casper the ghost, and then he realized the jig was up," Inspector Danny Potucek of the U.S. Marshals Service said. Following a trail of armed robberies that culminated in the slaying of a 29-year-old gas station attendant in Verona, officers arrived at the couch on Raccoon Road in Bishopville, S.C., around 7 a.m. today. Moments later, their sleepy suspect, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, was taken away barefoot and in handcuffs.

Authorities said Fate, a Newark resident, was hiding out at his mother's home after he and a cousin, convicted murderer Raymond Perry, 43, also of Newark, went on a robbery spree last month in Essex County. Their two-man crime wave left gas station attendant Daniel Pritchard dead, said Paul Loriquet, spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and John Cuff, a chief of the U.S. Marshals Service. Police answering a panic alarm found Pritchard dying of a gunshot wound in the Pompton Avenue station's office on Feb. 22, authorities have said.

Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said authorities have determined which man pulled the trigger, but she would not name the shooter because investigators are still building their case. Pritchard's killing kicked the investigation into high gear, Chief Anthony Ambrose of the prosecutor's office said. Sensing a pattern, a multidistrict task force was formed two days after the shooting to share evidence from the five robberies in four towns.

This story was posted on the nj.com website today, and if it weren’t for the fact that this was such a tragic story I would have been laughing my @ss off. The comments people posted about the race/ethnicity of the perps (because nj.com refused to post their photos) were hysterical.

"...he realized the jig was up...

Well, not quite...until he actually got to his feet, anyway...

Oops, sorry...

Why?

Why do these animals have to kill?

Are they that soul less or on drugs?

This is one of those crimes you wish the good guy had a gun and turned the tables.

Why? Room temperature IQ’s and a lack of impulse control.

WOW! We just moved from the Claridge Hi-rise in August and I went to that station all the time.

Verona is one of the lowest crime areas in the county. A murder is rare!

I am sure I probably spoke with the poor guy many times!

Prayers for his family.

Will only be a matter of time before some Freeper starts complaining about jack booted thugs breaking into a house with a warrant based on shaky evidence.

“This is one of those crimes you wish the good guy had a gun and turned the tables.”

Not in the People’s Republik of New Jersey. It is forbidden for law abiding citizens to protect themselves. Instead, it is advised to call the police and wait for help. Luckily, help arrived just in time to expedite removal of the victim’s corpse.

The leftist lordship over the citizens of this state is criminal.
