Lot of reasons for steroids ~ plus there are a host of psychoactive drugs that can do this ~ and then there's cancer, various types of heart trouble, and so on.
She's 52. By that age people begin counting themselves lucky to have held together well.
Remember, it's only through the magic of modern dentistry that most of us escape that horrible hollow cheek look that would otherwise brand people as crack addicts or worse!

On a positive note, I don't think Carrie has used any botox or any form of plastic surgery. Unlike a well known singer we all know who is all about her 22 year old Jesus nowadays.
